OPENING TIPS
UC Davis plays its final nonconference game of the regular-season when Cal State Bakersfiels visits on Wednesday before hosting its last home contest with Big West Conference foe Pacific coming in on Saturday... The Aggies are currently in fifth place in the conference standings with two league games remaining... Saturday’s game marks the last at The Pavilion for senior G Genevieve Costello who will be honored during pregame festivities... She is the lone senior on the Aggie squad this season... Costello has scored 623 career points, dished out nearly 200 assists and is closing in 100 career three-pointers... UC Davis head coach Sandy Simpson is just one win away from tying former coach JORJA HOEHN (1988-96, ‘97-98) for most career wins in program history with 205... Simpson had career-win No. 200 against Cal State Northridge on Jan. 4... UC Davis continues to play with just nine players after season-ending injuries to All-Big West W Haylee Donaghe and standout freshman W VICKI DEELY... The Aggies have had as few as seven players available during a game this season.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD
The Aggies won the first-ever matchup between the teams in 2000-01 by a score of 97-85 but the Roadrunners have won the remaining games to take a 7-1 all-time lead... The teams last met in 2003-04, UC Davis’ last schedule against primarily NCAA Div. II opponents... Cal State Bakersfield won 85-78 on Hamilton Court in the first meeting between the teams that year... The highest-scoring game between the teams was a 102-97 overtime win for the Roadrunners at UC Davis in the 2002-03 season.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. PACIFIC
The Tigers have won the last two games in the series, cutting the Aggies’ all-time lead to 7-6... UC Davis had won six straight before Pacific was victorious 72-71 last season and then 63-60 on Jan. 31... F JANAE YOUNG had 15 points and F AMBER SIMMONS had 13 to lead the Tigers in the earlier matchup this season while P Paige Mintun had 17 and W Kasey Riecks scored 14 to pace the Aggies... UC Davis had a chance to get a potential game-tying three-pointer off in the final seconds but was unable to do so.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE ROADRUNNERS
Cal State Bakersfield has won eight of its past 11 games including beating UC Santa Barbara 69-67 at home on Jan. 31... The Roadrunners, who are in their third year of a four-year reclassification to Division I, are 6-2 against Big West teams this season... They have four players averaging in double figures, a quartet that includes CHRISTI KEPENEKIAN (17.3), KATIE WILLIAMS (11.4), PHYNIQUE ALLEN (10.9) and KRISTA ARASE (10.1)... Kepenekian also leads the team in rebounding (8.5)... CSUB is averaging 73.1 ppg, allowing 69.7 ppg and shooting .434 from the field... Arase (59) and Kepenekian (43) have combined for more than 100 three-pointers.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE TIGERS
Pacific enters the week in fourth place in the Big West standings, dropping a 74-64 home game to Cal Poly on Saturday to snapp a two-game losing streak... The Tigers are 12-2 at home this season but just 2-9 on the road... F AMBER SIMMONS is second in the league in scoring (17.3) and fifth in rebounding (6.8) while teammate F JANAE YOUNG (11.3 ppg) - this week’s Big West Player of the Week - is third among rebounders (7.8)... Pacific entered the week second among Big West teams in scoring (64.9), first in rebounding margin (+5.2) and is second in offensive rebounds (15.1)... G GRETCHEN TIERNAN has canned a team-high 57 three-pointers, most in the conference, and is averaging 2.3 per game... G AMY VANHOLLEBEKE (3.9) is third in assists.
UC SANTA BARBARA 69, UC DAVIS 50
G Sha’Rae Gibbons went 5 for 5 from three-point territory overall and UC Santa Barbara outscored the Aggies by 18 points after the break as the Gauchos regained sole possession of first-place in the Big West Conference with a win over UC Davis on Saturday at The Pavilion... UCSB shot 62 percent from the field in the second half, including making 7 of 11 from three-point territory... UC Davis led by as many as seven points in the first half and was only down 26-25 at halftime... A three-point play from Juric highlighted a strong start in the second half for the Aggies who took a 32-29 lead less than three minutes in... Gibbons, though, tied it with her second trey of the half - she was 4 for 4 after halftime - and UCSB went on a 16-2 run including scoring 11 straight - to assume a 45-34 lead with 12:26 to go... UC Davis got to within nine points on three occassions but the Gauchos were able to build the lead. The final 19-point margin was the largest of the game... W Lauren Juric had 12 points and P Paige Mintun had 10 for the Aggies.
CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
UC Davis ranks among the top half in 11 Big West Conference statistical rankings including eight in the top three... Here’s where they rank among the top three: 3-pters made (1st, 6.4 pg), steals (2nd, 9.2 pg), FG pct. (2nd, .413), scoring defense (3rd, 59.4 ppg), FT pct. (3rd, .746), FG% pct. defense (3rd, .384) and rebounds allowed (3rd, 35.7 pg)... Nationally, UC Davis ranks among the top 100 teams in five stat areas: FT pct. (21sst, .746), 3-pt pct. (41st, .353), 3-pters made (46th, 6.4 pg), scoring defense (88th, 59.4 ppg) and FG pcy. (90th, .413)... Individually, P Paige Mintun is 60th among Div. I players for free throws (.821).
COSTELLO WINDING UP CAREER
G Genevieve Costello is the lone senior on this year’s Aggie squad and will be honored during pregame activities on Saturday before UC Davis’ matchup with Pacific... Costello entered the week with 625 career points, 190 assists, 110 steals and 90 three-pointers.... She is also shooting .838 from the line... Costello enjoyed perhaps her finest game as an Aggie last season when she went for a career-high 21 points at Cal State Northridge, scoring 18 in the first half when she tallied the team’s final 14 before intermission.
YOUTHFUL BUT GETTING MORE EXPERIENCE
he Aggies have just nine active players due to injuries with six of them either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen... The group has combined to start 73 games while accounting for 58 percent of the scoring (839 pts) and 49 percent of the rebounding (392 total)... W Kasey Riecks has started all 25 games - the only player to do so - and is averaging 31.3 min/game while three others are averaging at least 20 minutes.
SHOOTING THE THREE
UC Davis leads the league in made three-pointer at 6.4 per game but it’s difficult to key on just one player... Six Aggies have made at least 13 apiece with four at 23 or more including a pair at least 30... Individually they are: G Genevieve Costello (31), W Lauren Juric (30), W Cortney French (25), W Kasey Riecks (23), P Paige Mintun (14) and W Samantha Meggison (13)... Mintun entered the year with just six total while French’s total represents 76 percent of her total field goals made... Of her 92 attempts, 72 have been from beyond the arc... Juric has been the most successful from long distance, making 41 percent, second-best in the Big West.
TOP 10 IMPACTS
P Paige Mintun has 54 career blocks, pushing her to No. 9 on the all-time list with 50, seven from moving up another spot... W Haylee Donaghe had a career-high nine steals in the season-opener at Southern Utah, tying her with current associate head coach Jennifer Gross who had nine against Humbold State in 1996.
RAINING THREES
UC Davis has had three games where it’s made at least 11 three-pointers... The Aggies had a season-high 12 during an 85-69 win at Saint Mary’s on Dec. 6, then had 11 against both Stanford on Dec. 28 (L, 84-49) and UC Irvine on Jan. 17 (W, 68-56)... The school record is 17 made against Cal Poly last on Jan. 11, 2007.
DEFENSIVE STRETCH RIVALS ALL-TIME BEST
UC Davis went 2-1 over a recent three-game stretch against UC Riverside (Feb. 7), UC Irvine (Feb. 12) and Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 21) and much of the reason can be attributed to good defense... The Aggies didn’t allow more than 47 points, including holding UC Irvine to just 24 points, the fewest by an opponent since a 108-24 win over Patten College during the 1996-97 season... Opponents combined to average just 39.3 ppg and shoot only .234, including .155 from three-point territory... The first half was especially tough for opponents who averaged just 13 points... Included were just seven points from UC Irvine... The last time the Aggies had a better three-game defensive stretch was in the 1996-97 season when they beat Chico State (62-35), Notre Dame de Namur (87-28) and San Francisco State (67-47) for an average of 36.7 ppg allowed.
INJURIES SIDELINE AGGIES
UC Davis has been hampered with injuries throughout the season with players combining to miss 50 games so far this season... All-Big West W Haylee Donaghe (knee) became injured against South Dakota State in mid-December and will be sidelined the remainder of the season... Donaghe, who already had two seasons impacted due to unrelated injuries, received an NCAA clock extension in October and will be eligible to play in 2009-10... W Vicky Deely (leg) has played just three games, most recently the first two games of the Big West season, and will not play the rest of this season... P Lisa Peterson missed six games while four others have also been sidelined.
SIMPSON REACHES 200 WINS WITH ALL-TIME RECORD CLOSE
A Jan. 4 win against Cal State Northridge delivered head coach Sandy Simpson the 200th of his 12-year career, helping push his overall mark to its current 204-130 (.609)... With 204, he needs just two wins to pass former coach JORJA HOEHN (1988-95, 96-97) who amassed a 205-51 (.801) record during her impressive tenure... Simpson served as an assistant coach under Hoehn as well as mentor PAM GILL-FISHER (1975-79, 81-86, 87-88) who posted 164 career victories... His first year in 1996-97, when he assumed interim leadership duties while Hoehn took a one-year absence, resulted in a 29-3 record and third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
UC Davis has three double-doubles this season, including two by redshirt freshman P Lauren Juric... Juric tallied 14 points and 11 boards at Sacramento State on Dec. 13 while adding another against visiting UC Riverside on Feb. 7 when she went for 14 points and 12 rebounds... Sophomore P Paige Mintun had the other double-double when she had 25 points and 10 rebounds against Cal State Northridge on Jan. 4... It was the first of her career and came on a night when she added seven assists, three blocks and six steals.
