DAVIS, Calif.- The UC Davis Athletics community and the women's basketball program are mourning the loss of former player Genevieve Costello who passed away Tuesday night, May 7, 2013 after a brief but courageous battle with breast cancer. Services will be held next week in Southern California.

Genevieve was an inspirational leader and dynamic point guard for the UC Davis women's basketball team from 2005-2009.

Genevieve was diagnosed with aggressive and unexpected stage IV breast cancer on April 17 and immediately began a valiant fight to beat the disease. Friends and family started an online fundraising effort to help with expenses and to provide emotional support.

A San Diego native, Genevieve led Mount Miguel High School to four straight CIF championships. She became a key member of the UC Davis basketball team in 2005 and helped the Aggies transition to Division I status. In 2008, the first year of Division I for UC Davis, Genevieve was a member of the Aggies' team that played in the Big West Tournament Championship and advanced to the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Genevieve was a fearless competitor who always played with passion in her 113 games as an Aggie. She will be remembered for her contagious positive energy and the trademark smile she displayed throughout her outstanding playing career.

Genevieve was 26 years old. She is survived by her parents, Paul and Myrna Costello, and four older sisters, Minerva, Jennifer, Maria and Rose.

A viewing will be held at Glen Abbey Mortuary in Bonita, Calif., from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John of the Cross Parish in Lemon Grove with cemetery services to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego.
