The UC Davis women's basketball team was picked to finish sixth by the media in the race for the Big West Conference crown in 2013-14 while junior forward Sydnee Fipps was one of six players selected to the preseason all-conference team as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The Aggies earned 72 points from media members, finishing ahead of Cal State Fullerton (59), UC Irvine (54), and UC Riverside (38). Defending Big West champion Cal Poly was the popular pick to defend its title, earning 17 first-place votes and 177 points to edge out second-place Hawaii (three first-place votes, 159 points).

Cal State Northridge (121 points), Long Beach State (120), and UC Santa Barbara (100), round out the top five.

Fipps, a first-team All-Big West selection as a sophomore in 2012-13, earned preseason all-conference honors after starting all 30 games for the Aggies last season, averaging a team-high 17.1 points (second in the conference) and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting .443 from the floor, .319 from three-point range, and .817 from the line.

Her 512 points were the most by a sophomore in school history, including a career-high 29 points against Long Beach State on Jan. 31, and led the team in scoring in 21 of the team's 30 contests.

Fipps is joined on the preseason honor roll by UC Riverside's Brittany Crain, Cal State Northridge's Ashlee Guay, Hawaii's Kamilah Jackson, Long Beach State's Alex Sanchez, and Cal Poly's Molly Schlemer.

Led by third-year head coach Jennifer Gross, the Aggies return three starters and seven letter winners overall off of last season's squad that finished 12-18 overall and 7-11 in Big West play for seventh place.

The Aggies host Humboldt State in an exhibition on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m., before officially opening the 2013-14 campaign a week later at The Pavilion on Nov. 8 against Pacific-12 Conference power USC at 7 p.m.
