DAVIS, Calif. -- With the official start of the 2017-18 season just a little over a week away, the UC Davis women's basketball team is receiving national attention to tip-off the year, ranking No. 20 in the nation according to the College Insider Preseason Mid-Major poll released on Oct. 31.

The Aggies are ranked for the first time after spending four consecutive weeks among those receiving votes from Feb. 14 to March 7 last season. UC Davis debuted in last season's poll on Dec. 13 and picked up a season-high 11 votes in the mid-major rankings on Jan. 10 after opening Big West Conference play with a 2-0 mark.

Coming off a season that saw them finish 25-8 overall, claim the Big West regular season title with a 14-2 mark, and advance three rounds deep in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, the Aggies return all five starters and all but one player off of last season's roster in a bid to make another postseason run.

Selected to repeat as Big West champions according to a vote of both the league's head coaches and the media, UC Davis is scheduled to meet three other teams among those receiving votes in the poll: Saint Mary's (88 points), Long Beach State (27), and CSUN (1).

Quinnipiac, which finished last season ranked No. 1, enters the year at the top spot, receiving 28 of the 31 first-place votes, followed by Gonzaga, Drake, Green Bay, and South Dakota State, in the top five.

In its eighth season of existence, the mid-major poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial Athletic Association, Horizon League, Ivy League, Metro Atlantic Athletic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit League, Sun Belt, West Coast, and Western Athletic.

UC Davis opens the season with an exhibition against NCAA Division II Academy of Art on Friday (Nov. 3) at 5 p.m. at The Pavilion, before officially opening the season against Washington State in a rematch of last year's WNIT "Sweet 16" contest on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
