THE SERIES VS. BOISE STATE AND GONZAGA: Boise State beat UC Davis 54-53 in the only all-time matchup between the schools... That game was played at UC Davis... The Aggies and Gonzaga have never squared off on the hardcourt... The Bulldogs are one of seven teams on this year's schedule that are first-time opponents for UC Davis... Syracuse, which the Aggies could meet in the second round of the Brown Classic in early December, is a possible eighth.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BRONCOS AND BULLDOGS: Boise State finished 15-15 last season under head coach Gordy Presnell, who was in his first season with the Broncos... Presnell is no stranger to Aggie fans, having coached 18 years at Seattle Pacific, a longtime opponent of UC Davis during the Aggies' Division II era... Boise State returns four starters off last year's squad... G Nadio Begay is the top returning scorer having averaged 12.3 ppg and 2.3 rpg in 2005-06... Also back are SF Jackie Lee (12.2), C Michelle Hessing (8.6) and PF Jackie Thompson (2.3)... Boise State had its first non-losing season in six seasons last year.... Gonzaga finished 16-14 last season but returns six letterwinners and three starters, including All-West Coast Conference first-team pick F STEPHANIE HAWK and WCC All-Newcomer Team selection G JAMI BJORKLUND.. Hawk averaged 12.9 ppg and 7.1 rpg last year... The Bulldogs finished 11-3 in the WCC last year, earning second place.
SIMPSON ONE WIN FROM NO. 2 SPOT ON COACHING LIST: HEAD COACH Sandy Simpson is just one win away from catching former head coach and current Senior Associate Athletics Director PAM GILL-FISHER for the No. 2 spot on the program's all-time coaching list... Simpson is 163-87 all-time and in his 10th season for the Aggies, while Gill-Fisher had a 10-year record of 164-29 that covered the years 1975-88 (she did not coach 1980-81 and 1986-87)... JORJA HOEHN (205-51, 1998-96, `97-98), a current member of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, is the all-time leader.
TOP TWO RETURNEES ARE REDSHIRTING: It was planned prior to the season that W Jessica Campbell, who averaged 12.2 ppg. and 4.4 rpg, would redshirt this season in order to protect her final season of eligibility for 2007-08... What wasn't planned, however, was that P Ellen Porshneva, who would've been the team's only returning starter after averaging 11.8 ppg and 4.2 rpg., was going to join her... However, a severe knee injury to Porshneva just prior to preseason drills sent her to the sidelines where she will rehab and rejoin Campbell for her senior season next year.
FROM WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE TO NEW FACES: A lot of the Aggies' success last season could be attributed to the fact that UC Davis had a starting quintet that was playing its third year together... With the group mastering UC Davis' complicated Princeton-style offense, the Aggies rolled to an 11-5 record and a "mythical" share of the Big West Conference regular-season championship... However, three of the starters - G Jackie Turpin (12.3 ppg), W Kimberly Smith (10.8) and P Lara Gray (9.9) - were in their senior season... With the redshirting of W Jessica Campbell and P Ellen Porshneva this season, the Aggies will look to five new starters... The most experienced from last season is W Heather Bates, who converted 29 three-pointeres - third-best on the team - and averaged 5.7 ppg... Altogether, the Aggies lost 85 percent of their scoring... Six letterwinners overall return ready to push UC Davis this season.
UC DAVIS GOES 1-1 IN EXHIBITION GAMES: The Aggies split a pair of games during the exhibition portion of their season... W Heather Bates scored a game-high 20 points and had 12 rebounds as UC Davis pulled away in the second half and beat the Melbourne Roos 70-51 on Nov. 2... Bates had a game-tying three-pointer late in the contest against Sonoma State on Monday night but the Seawolves were able to break the deadlock and hold on for a 43-41 win... Bates had 11 points to lead the Aggies in that contest.
SERVING NOTICE IN THE BIG WEST: UC Davis sent notice throughout the Big West Conference that it's going to be a tough program to deal with in the coming years... The Aggies won't become official members of the league until the 2007-08 season but UC Davis played a full round-robin schedule against league teams last season, compiling an 11-5 record... That mark would've tied the Aggies with Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara for the conference's regular-season championship had UC Davis' games been counted in the standings... The Aggies beat every team in the Big West Conference at least once during the season.
AGGIES NAILS FROM THE FREE THROW LINE IN 2005-06: It should've probably been obvious after the opening game last year against Radford that UC Davis was going to have a special year from the free throw line... The Aggies made 21 of 22 (.955) of their charity stripe attempts that game, then followed with a 10-of-11 effort at Cal on their way to making .885 of their tries over the first five games... That set the stage for UC Davis posting the best mark in the Division I stat rankings every reporting period during the season until the final report of the regular season... However, the Aggies finished at a school-record .796 which was good enough to make them No. 1 nationally when the national championships concluded... UC Davis is not eligible to be officially ranked in the stats because of their reclassification status.
DIVISION I OR DIVISION II? A LESSON IN RECLASSIFICATION: UC Davis is in its final year of a four-year reclassification to NCAA Division I status... Officially, UC Davis (like all other institutions currently reclassifying) is a Div. II institution until its first active year of Div. I (for UC Davis, that's in 2007-08)... However, the university was required to follow all NCAA Div. I rules and regulations, including those governing scheduling, beginning in 2004-05... Similarly, UC Davis began counting as a Div. I team for its opponents strength-of-schedule purposes two years ago, started to be included in Div. I stats, and has been added to most media coverage of Div. I athletics, primarily because of its competition... UC Davis will become official members of the Big West Conference in 2007-08 but has been fully integrated into regular-season scheduling in all its member sports, including women's basketball.
