Nov. 11, 2007
OPENING TIPS: UC Davis opens its first season of NCAA Division I play and its first season in the Big West Conference by hosting rival Sacramento State in the teams' annual Causeway Classic matchup... The game will be worth 10 points in this year's all-sport Causeway Cup lead which UC Davis currently leads 30-10... The Aggies are 5-5 in season-openers under 11th-year head coach Sandy Simpson, including a 2-1 record at home... The Aggies return three players (W Heather Bates, G Genevieve Costello, G Kirsten Commins) who each started at least 27 games last year, two more (G Anna Harp, W Haylee Donaghe) who started at least 14 games, and two others (W Jessica Campbell, P Ellen Porshneva) who started all 28 games in 2005-06 but redshirted last year... UC Davis is in its first playoff-eligible year since the 2002-03 season and looking to play a postseason game for the first time since 1998-99.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SACRAMENTO STATE: The Hornets hold a 27-19 lead in the all-time series between the teams but UC Davis has won three of the past four meetings since the programs resumed their rivalry in 2004-05 after a 10-year layoff... The Aggies have won seven of the past eight games overall dating back to the 1989-90 campaign... UC Davis is 11-7 at home against Sacramento State and has won four straight on its home floor... W Heather Bates scored 14 points, and former G Laura Thomas and G Anna Harp each had 12 as UC Davis beat the Hornets 59-55 at The Pavilion last season... G KIM SHEEHY, now an assistant coach with Sacramento State, scored 16 points.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE HORNETS: Sacramento State returns two starters and eight letterwinners off last year's team that finished 3-27 overall and 1-15 in the Big Sky Conference... BECCA REAMS (7.6 ppg) is the team's leading returning scorer, ERIKA EDWARDS (4.2 rpg) is the team's leading returning rebounder, and G KELLI DAVIS had 24 assists to lead returnees in that department... The Hornets, who beat William Jessup 95-35 in their only exhibition game, have lost their last 15 regular-season matchups... G SAMI FIELD-POLISSO scored 21 points to lead Sacramento State in their exhibition win... A 33-7 run in the first half helped the Hornets take a 40-13 lead... DAN MUSCATELL (Western Washington `83) is 21-90 and in his fourth year as head coach at Sacramento State.
WELCOME TO NCAA DIVISION I: UC Davis begins its first season as an official member of Division I and the Big West Conference... The university announced its decision to reclassify to its new division in March 2003 and then began a four-year transition period in which it was ineligible for NCAA Championships (in most sports)... The Aggies are members of the Big West Conference for 17 of its 26 sports... UC Davis played partial Big West schedules in most sports in 2004-05 and have played full schedules each of the past two seasons... The Aggies became official members of the league on July 1.
SUCCESS AGAINST THE BIG WEST: UC Davis is no stranger to Big West Conference competition having competed against the league's teams each of the past three seasons, including the last two when the Aggies played full 16-game round-robin schedules... The Aggies have done well against their new league-mates... They went 11-5 in 2005-06, beating every team in the conference at least once, and would've tied for the regular-season Big West title had they officially counted in the standings... UC Davis finished 8-8 against Big West teams last year.

DYNAMIC SENIOR DUO RETURN TO LINEUP: W Jessica Campbell and P Ellen Porshneva are back on the court again as seniors after redshirting last season... Campbell was a planned redshirt for 2006-07 while Porshneva suffered a season-ending injury during preseason drills and sat out the year... The pair were integral parts of the Aggies' success during their first three seasons, with Campbell averaging 11.3 ppg in 2005-06 on her way to All-Division I Independent honors and Porshneva averaging 11.8 ppg... Had UC Davis been eligible to be officially ranked in the Div. I stats during that season, Campbell would've ranked 10th in free throw percentage at .894, and Porshneva would've been 13th at .881.
BATES BECOMES `SUPER-SENIOR': W Heather Bates led UC Davis in scoring (12.7) and rebounding (6.7) last season and was named to the All-Div. I Independent second-team... She also enjoyed a memorable senior tribute during the Aggies' final home game against Long Beach State...However, Bates will receive more senior accolades this season after she was granted another year of eligibility this summer under new NCAA rules governing medical hardships... New rules increased the amount of games an individual could play in a particular season and still be eligible to apply for a hardship...Bates, who began her collegiate career at UC Riverside, played eight games for the Highlanders in 2003-04 before being injured... Under previous NCAA rules, she didn't qualify, but did under new ones... She was also helped by the fact the NCAA made the rule retroactive.
HARP DOUBLED AVERAGE AGAINST BIG WEST TEAMS: G Anna Harp began her freshman season last year with modest numbers for a first-year player, averaging 6.6 ppg, 1.4 rpg and 0.7 apg... But after moving into a starting role during most of the Big West portion of the schedule, Harp sharply increased her output... She averaged 12.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2.1 apg in 16 "league" contests... Harp's points and rebounds were second-best on the team... She went on to be named to the Div. I All-Independent honorable mention and newcomer teams.
UC DAVIS TO BE TESTED WITH SCHEDULE: The Aggies will face their toughest schedule ever in 2007-08 by playing six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, two of which are also ranked in preseason polls this season... Four of those games come during a five-game stretch in the early season... The Aggies will play Washington on Nov. 18, at Stanford (ranked 7th by AP) on Dec. 2, host Gonzaga (WCC champion) on Dec. 6, and then travel to Arizona State (ranked 12th by AP) on Dec. 9... UC Davis will also play at NCAA-qualifier Drake on Dec. 30 and play home-and-home Big West games with UC Riverside on Jan. 5 (home) and Mar. 6 (away)... ASU advanced to a regional final last season... Stanford and ASU are picked first and second, respectively, in this year's preseason Pac-10 polls.
MINTUN ALSO BACK IN THE AGGIES' LINEUP: P Paige Mintun came to UC Davis with an impressive prep resume which included two years on the All-San Diego Section team and was expected to make major contributions to a young Aggie squad in 2006-07... The 6-foot-2 post from Valley Center, Calif., began the year strong, starting her first two games and averaging 9.0 ppg in that span... However, a foot injury in the second game of the season at Gonzaga - after she scored 12 points and blocked two shots - sidelined her for the rest of the year with a medical hardship... She returns as a redshirt freshman and is again expected to be a major part of the Aggies' plans.
CAMPBELL CLOSING IN ON 1,000-POINT CLUB: W Jessica Campbell is on pace to become the 13th Aggie player to reach 1,000 career points... She currently has 938 points and with her career average of 11.3 ppg, could reach the milestone during the Aggies' sixth game at Stanford on Dec. 2... P Ellen Porshneva was the last UC Davis player to score 1,000 career points, doing so in the 2005-06 season.... She is currently ranked No. 8 at UC Davis with 1,104 points... Porshneva should move up the scoring ladder as well, potentially finishing as high as No. 2... She needs 314 to do so - passing STACI STEVENS (1,417; 1985-88) and would do so in the final games of the season if she keeps her current average of 11.8 ppg.
EXHIBITION RECAPS: W Jessica Campbell and W Haylee Donaghe each had 18 points, G Anna Harp had 12 and P Ashley Curry scored 10 as UC Davis beat Humboldt State 79-61 in an exhibition game at The Pavilion on Nov. 1... UC Davis led 38-22 at halftime on its way to the win over the Div. II Lumberjacks... The Aggies shot 29 of 36 (.806) from the line... UC Davis had a much easier time against Concordia (Ore.) last Monday, racing to a 41-14 halftime lead before winning 83-33... The Aggies had 27 assists on 33 baskets in the game, including nine assists from G Kirsten Commins and eight assists from G Genevieve Costello.... G Anna Harp had 15 points to lead UC Davis while Campbell scored 12 and P Ellen Porshneva tallied 11... The Aggies also made 9 of 19 three-points attempts with Harp going 5 of 9 from beyond the arc.
