Aggies Down Dons for Fifth Straight Win
Samantha Meggison had her fifth-straight double-digit scoring effort of the season with 16 points and Blair Shinoda grabbed 10 rebounds as the pair led the UC Davis women's basketball team to a 64-50 win over the University of San Francisco on Tuesday at The Pavilion in Davis.
UC Davis dropped its season opener to Pepperdine on Nov. 9, falling 83-68 to the Waves... It marked the first season-opening loss for the Aggies since the 2006-07 season.
The Aggies were led by Sydnee Fipps
who scored a career-high 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field... She also hit a career-high nine free throws in the loss.
All five Aggie freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Friday, including Molly Greubel
who scored 16 points in 28 minutes of action... Greubel hit 3-of-4 from the field, including two treys, and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Friday's game was the first home opener for UC Davis since the 2007-08 season.
San Francisco claimed a 65-52 win over Hawai'i on Friday at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco.
Senior Mel Khlok scored a game-high 17 points in the win, shooting 5-of-12 from the field... She led three Dons in double-digit scoring.
USF returns eight letterwinners from a 2011-12 team that finished the season at 5-25... Khlok averaged 8.0 points per game and joins Bailey Barbour and Jamie Katuna as the Dons' top returners.
The Dons also welcome five newcomers to the 2012-13 roster. including freshman Denae Mary Williams who scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting in Friday's win over Hawai'i.
UC Davis has won the last four straight contests against San Francisco.
Wednesday's game marks the tenth meeting between UC Davis and San Francisco, with the Aggies holding a 5-4 series advantage.
UC Davis claimed a 64-50 victory last season at The Pavilion, marking the fourth straight victory over the Dons.
Jennifer Gross begins her second season as head coach of the UC Davis women's basketball team after leading the Aggies to their third consecutive postseason appearance in 2011-12... In her first year at the helm of the program, the Aggies saw several milestones including Kasey Riecks' 1000th career point and Samantha Meggison and Hannah Stephens' selections to the All-Big West Conference team.
Jennifer Azzi begins her third season at the University of San Francisco... One of the most decorated women's basketball players in the game, she was a four-year captain for Stanford, leading the Cardinal to a 1990 national championship... Professionally she was a gold medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
SAN FRANCISCO SCOUTING REPORT
San Francisco graduated three starters from the 2011-12 squad, including the team's leading scorer in Rheina Ale.
Senior Whitney Daniels started all 30 games for USF last season, averaging 4.9 rebounds to go with 27 blocks.
The Dons topped Hawai'i 65-52 for their first season-opening victory since the 2003-04 season.
Mel Khlok led all players with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting... She averaged 8.0 points, shooting 40 percent from the field, and 1.5 assists for the Dons last season and also collected a team-high 52 steals.
San Francisco welcomes five newcomers to the 2012-13 roster, including Denae Mary Williams who scored 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed five rebounds in her collegiate debut on Friday.
USF was picked to finish ninth in the West Coast Conference.

AGGIES AGAINST THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE
Wednesday's game marks the second consecutive game against a West Coast Conference opponent for UC Davis after the Aggies took on Pepperdine in the Nov. 9 season opener.
UC Davis and the West Coast Conference, have always matched up evenly... UC Davis has faced all but three of the teams in the WCC: BYU, Loyola Marymount and San Diego.
The Aggies are 24-29 overall against the WCC after the Nov. 9 loss... This year the Aggies will face Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and San Francisco, all of which are WCC teams.
FREE THROW FINESSE
UC Davis hit 27-of-35 from the free throw line in Friday's loss to Pepperdine, hitting 77 percent from the charity stripe.
Sydnee Fipps led the way, hitting 9-of-10, while freshman Molly Greubel was 8-of-10 from the line... Idit Oryon made 3-of-4 free throw attempts.
Last season UC Davis shot .698 from the line, ranking fifth in the Big West... Last year, Blair Shinoda shot 79 percent from the charity stripe.
TOO MANY TURNOVERS
UC Davis committed 28 turnovers in Friday's loss which led to 30 Pepperdine points.
It marks the most turnovers since registering 32 against UCLA on Nov. 21, 2010 in Los Angeles.
Last season, UC Davis had the best turnover margin in the Big West Conference with a +3.80 margin... The Aggies averaged 16.1 turnovers per game, but forced 19.9 per game from their opponents.
MAKING AN ENTRANCE
All five freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Friday in the loss to Pepperdine.
Molly Greubel was the team's second-highest scorer with 16 points... She hit 2-of-3 from three-point range and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line while also grabbing three rebounds and collecting two steals in 28 minutes of action.
Alyson Doherty made her first collegiate start... She had six boards and three steals in 19 minutes.
Celia Marfone went 3-of-4 from the free throw line while also collecting three steals.
Aniya Baker and Heidi Johnson also saw action... Baker dished out an assist while Johnson had a rebound and two points in five minutes of action.
Junior transfer Kelsey Harris joins the 2012-13 roster after two seasons at Iowa State... She will sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules.
