Big opening weekend nets Bertsch Big West honors

Nov. 13, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. -- A record-setting weekend for UC Davis junior forward Morgan Bertsch has netted the Santa Rosa, Calif., native her second career Big West Conference Player of the Week award, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

In claiming the conference's first award of the 2017-18 season, the biomedical engineering major picked up her first honor since Dec. 26 of last season and the 15th overall by an Aggie since joining the league in 2007-08.

Helping UC Davis to an unblemished opening weekend for the second consecutive season, Bertsch averaged 23.0 points per game and shot 61 percent from the field in wins over Washington State and Pepperdine, becoming the 18th player in the history of the program -- and the fourth to do it as a junior -- to reach 1,000 career points in the win over the Waves.

Bertsch joins the program's all-time leading scorer Carol Rische, Sydnee Fipps (No. 2 on the all-time list), and Ellen Porshneva (No. 8), as juniors to have reached the milestone in their third years as Aggies, and becomes the first UC Davis player to reach the milestone since Alyson Doherty in 2015-16.

She tied her career high with 27 points -- 21 of those in the second half -- in 26 minutes against Pepperdine, hitting the career milestone on a basket inside at the 1:49 mark of the third quarter, while making 13-of-18 from the floor in the Aggies', 69-64, victory. The 13 makes are a single-game record in the program's Division I history, breaking Jessica Campbell's mark of 12 against Saint Mary's in 2007, and came within three of Aimee Conner's all-time record of 16 set at Cal Poly that has stood since 1993.

The 27 points matched her single-game best set at San Francisco on Dec. 21 of last year and an identical scoring performance at UC Santa Barbara later in the season on Feb. 4. The total stands in a six-way tie for seventh on the single-game scoring list in the program's Division I history.

Two nights earlier, in Friday's season opener against the Cougars, Bertsch finished with a game-high 19 points in 22 minutes, hitting 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line to help UC Davis avenge a loss to Washington State in the "Sweet 16" of last year's Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Cougars entered the night among those "receiving votes" in the preseason Associated Press poll.

In addition to her Big West Conference honor, Bertsch was also named the league's player of the week by

The Aggies wrap up their three-game season-opening home stand on Friday (Nov. 17), welcoming Portland State to The Pavilion for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
