Nagel nails down Big West weekly honors

Nov. 27, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sharpshooting senior guard Rachel Nagel collected Big West Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career on Monday afternoon after helping UC Davis to a perfect 3-0 week on the road and the program's best-ever start at the Division I level with its sixth consecutive victory.

Monday marks the Aggies' second player of the week honor in the first three weeks of the regular season, joining junior Morgan Bertsch, who picked up the first weekly award from the league back on Nov. 13. Nagel, a psychology major from La Palma, Calif., becomes the 11th different UC Davis women's basketball player to earn player of the week laurels from the Big West and the 16th overall award since the 2007-08 season.

Averaging 15.7 points per game and shooting just under 59 percent from the field, Nagel helped the Aggies remain perfect on the year with three straight wins on the road by an average margin of victory of 28 points. UC Davis, ranked No. 11 in the nation in the most recent Mid-Major poll, posted victories over Pacific (90-58), Southern Utah (85-59), and Seattle University (79-53), to improve to 6-0 for the season -- its best run to start a campaign since the 1994 squad opened with seven consecutive wins.

Nagel opened with 17 points and seven rebounds against the Tigers, hitting 6-of-11 from the field, and followed that up with a post-Thanksgiving feast on the boards, grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds to go with a balanced seven-point, two-assist, and three-steal, stat line. It was her second career double-digit rebound performance and just one off her career high of 11 set against Montana State last season.

Two days later, she saved her best for last against the Redhawks, finishing with a career-high 23 points on a career-best 8-of-11 from the floor, while locking down on defense, limiting reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kamira Sanders to an 0-for-12 afternoon from the field.

Entering the week, Nagel leads the Big West in both field goal percentage (.614) and three-pointers per game (2.7), while standing among the top 10 in scoring (4th, 16.2 ppg), assists per game (t9th, 2.7), three-point percentage (5th, .533), and minutes per game (7th, 30.2 mpg). She has finished in double figures in five of the Aggies' six contests this season, including a 20-point outing against Portland State on Nov. 17.

UC Davis returns home for its next two games, beginning with a Causeway Cup battle against rival Sacramento State on Thursday (Nov. 30) at The Pavilion. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
