DAVIS, Calif - Emily Mecke scored just before halftime to break a scoreless deadlock while Cloey LemMon added two goals in the second half, helping spark the UC Davis women's field hockey team to a 4-1 nonconference win over La Salle on Monday afternoon at Aggie Stadium.
UC Davis improved to 2-0, its best start since beginning the 2008 season - the year it re-emerged as a varstiy program - with a 3-0 mark. The Aggies, who also picked up a goal from Nadia Namdari early in the second half, improved to 2-1 all-time against La Salle. The Explorers, led by Juliana Carfagno who scored their only goal, dropped to 1-2.
The Aggies dominated the offensive statistics, outshooting La Salle 28-4 including a 16-1 advantage in the second half. That kept the Explorer's goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer busy but she had a strong game making 11 saves.
UC Davis took 12 of the game's 15 shots in the first half but was only able to find the back of the cage once when Mecke took a ball off the stick of Mattie Maloney to score from in front of the goal with just 1 minute, 6 seconds remaining. The momentum carried over into the second half when LemMon scored her first goal in the 43rd minute off a deflection from Mecke who picked up the assist.
Namdari made it a three-goal advantage just over six minutes later, firing a shot into the back of the cage from an assist by freshman Jamie Garcia. Trailing 3-0, La Salle took advantage of a rare scoring opportunity when Carfagno converted a centering pass from Mariel Papa to score from three yards in the 54th minute.
LemMon's final goal, her third of the season, came when she deflected Marissa Hughes' shot. La Salle had just one shot on goal and the Aggies had a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.
UC Davis will look for its third straight victory - and fourth dating back to last season - when it hosts Bryant University on Saturday at noon.
