STOCKTON, Calif. - Emily Mecke rebounded a shot from freshman Jamie Garcia off a penalty corner in overtime on Sunday afternoon as the UC Davis women's field hockey team opened NorPac Conference play with a 4-3 victory over host Pacific.

The Aggies, who twice battled back from one-goal deficits to tie the game, won for the second straight time, improving to 5-6 overall. The Tigers, who were outshot 29-8 by UC Davis, dropped to 3-6.

Marissa Hughes had two goals for UC Davis while Garcia opened the day with her second of the season. Maggie Grindatti tallied her first for Pacific while Melissa Maultsby had two. Conley Craven had five saves in the game and the Tigers' Ashlee Schlesier, who faced 18 shots on goal, had a dozen.

"The team played with heart and composure," said Aggie coach Vianney Campos. "Every time Pacific took the lead, our players stayed focused on the game plan and trusted that they would create the opportunities to score. We played as a team and really utilized our speed to get behind Pacific's defenders. I am pleased with their effort and happy to start conference play with a win."

The teams played a scoreless game for 24 minutes before Garcia got the Aggies on the scoreboard first with a shot to the back left corner of the cage. But the lead would last less than two minutes when Grindatti rebounded Emily Trudeau's shot off a penalty corner and scored to the left of the goal.

The first half was statistically even with both teams taking five shots and the Tigers holding a slight 2-1 edge in penalty corners. But UC Davis would turn up the notch in the second half, outshooting the hosts 21-2 and taking 11 of the half's 13 penalty corners. The Aggies, however, weren't able to get on the scoreboard while Pacific took advantage of one of its limited opportunities when Doreen Stern and Jenna Vivian teamed on a corner to set up Maultsby who picked up her third goal of the season.

The next 12 minutes featured three goals as Hughes answered for UC Davis in the 52nd minute on a penalty stroke goal. Barely a minute later, Maultsby sent Pacific back in the lead, 3-2, one-timing a cross from Emily Tregoning. Hughes later tied the game for a second time, dribbling into the circle on the left side and beating Schlesier to her left in the 61st minute.

The Aggies had three shots on goal the remainder of regulation but were unable to take the lead, resulting in overtime where they had three of the extra time's four shots. Garcia and Mecke ended it on a penalty corner in the 73rd minute. Garcia took a shot on the play, it was saved by Schlesier, but Mecke was there to score her third goal of the season and her second game-winner.

UC Davis has been on the road for its last eight games but will return to Aggie Stadium and another NorPac matchup next Sunday when it hosts Cal at noon.
