DAVIS, Calif.— A second-half rally by the Aggies kept the Golden Bears within striking distance during Friday’s America East Conference match. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the second period saw an explosive effort by the UC Davis offense with sophomores Lauren Gengarella and Tatiana Arias tallying their first career goals. But a third goal from California would prove too much for the rally to overcome, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Golden Bears over UC Davis.

The Golden Bears improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 for America East play. The Aggies will look to face the Buckeyes on Sunday with a 1-8 record.

UC Davis junior Kelley Kramer notched her second defensive save on the season in the first few minutes of play. Aggie goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow posted her fourth double digit game of the season, notching 10 saves against the Golden Bears. Bigelow’s total saves for the 2017 season now resides at 74.

The Golden Bears took a swift lead during the first half of Friday’s match, scoring two goals within the first seven minutes. The Aggies were unable to answer the California offense, and entered halftime trailing by two.

But the Aggie offense would find their stride in the second half. Sophomore Lauren Gengarella notched her first career goal with just 14:48 left to play. Gengarella’s shot from the right post was assisted by senior Briana Sooy.

But with 10:58 remaining, the Golden Bears drew and successfully converted a penalty stroke, extending their lead over UC Davis to two.

In the 65th minute, a penalty corner opportunity would prove golden for the Aggies. UC Davis forward Tatiana Arias tallied her first career goal off the corner, placing the Aggies within one of the Golden Bears. Arias’s goal was set up by Nica Taglieri and Madison Cohen.

But the UC Davis rally would not be able to close the rest of the gap, lifting California to a 3-2 win over the Aggies.
