DAVIDSON, N.C. - Appalachian State scored three minutes into overtime on its way to a 2-1 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference field hockey game Friday evening at Belk Turf Field in Davidson, N.C. Lindsey Valadez scored her third goal of the season for the Aggies. The game was the second of three in four days for UC Davis (3-8) in Davidson.
Appalachian State (6-5) opened the scoring with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half when Christine Zanowicz connected on an unassisted goal to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
It would stay that way through halftime but wouldn't last long after the second half started. In the sixth minute, Valadez scored on a penalty corner. Kristen Lopez and Ashley Haight had assists as the Aggies tied the game at 1-1. Neither team would score again in regulation setting the Aggies up for their fourth overtime game in 11 contests.
It took nearly three minutes for ASU to clinch the win as Jessie Harris scored with 7:01 remaining in overtime to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 victory.
"Tonight's game was a great turnaround after a tough loss on Thursday," said UC Davis head coach Vianney Campos. "The players came out with confidence and the drive to put the ball in the circle. We controlled most of the game but couldn't quite finish in front of the cage. Both keepers played extremely well and kept the score low even with a high number of shots."
UC Davis outshot ASU, 23-18. Valadez took a team-high five shots while Erin LemMon Anna Stolitzka, Hilary Smith and Ellre Ancheta each had three. Lauren Sawvelle saved seven shots for UC Davis, and Bridgette Street had 14 for ASU.
UC Davis concludes its road trip Sunday against Radford.
