BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Erin Magill scored two goals while junior Natalie Nurnberg tallied three assists to lead California to a 6-1 win over UC Davis in NorPac Conference women's field hockey action at Maxwell Family Field Saturday afternoon. Freshman Liz Siemion scored the lone goal for the Aggies.
UC Davis slips to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Golden Bears snap a three-game skid to move to 4-8 for the year, 2-1 in NorPac contests.
Cal prevailed with a 28-5 advantage in shots -- including 19-2 before the halftime break -- and a 15-4 edge in penalty corners. Nurnberg posted a goal and assist during first-half action, sending the Golden Bears into the break with a 3-0 lead. She and freshman Deanna Kennedy then assisted Magill for a goal on the opening possession of the second period to extend the Cal lead to four.
UC Davis ended its scoring drought in the 51st minute when Siemion tipped an entry pass from defender Lindsey Valadez into the cage. However, Cal quickly responded with a goal in the 55th. Magill scored on another double assist from Kennedy and Nurnberg, converting a penalty corner to restore the Golden Bear lead at four.
UC Davis managed only one more shot the rest of the way. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Sawvelle recorded 11 saves in front of the Aggie net, while midfielder Lydia Brambila was credited with a defensive save.
The Aggies return to action on October 17 for a NorPac tilt against Stanford, currently ranked 13th nationally.
