UC Davis drops overtime heartbreaker in Berkeley, 3-2

BERKELEY, Calif. — Under the lights of Underhill Field, the Aggies battled against the Golden Bears during a chilly Friday night contest in Berkeley. UC Davis forced overtime against California for the second time this season thanks to goals from Briana Sooy and Emily Chen. Goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow posted another outstanding performance in the goal cage, tallying 12 saves on the night. But the Aggies could not hold on in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Golden Bears over the Aggies.

The Golden Bears improve to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in America East play. The Aggies will enter their next game on Sunday against Pacific with a 1-14 mark.

Senior Briana Sooy notched her first goal of the season and freshman Emily Chen tallied her first career goal as an Aggie to force overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow posted 12 saves on the night including three during the overtime period. Bigelow’s total saves for the season now resides at 121, just 10 saves shy of the UC Davis all-time record for saves in a season.

The Golden Bears were the first to score during Friday’s contest, finding the back of the cage on a penalty corner in the 20th minute of play.

Six minutes later the Aggies evened the score with an unassisted goal by senior Briana Sooy, who’s breakaway shot tied the game 1-1 with just under 10 minutes left to play in the first half.

California then regained the lead off a penalty corner in the 27th minute, taking a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Then in the 57th minute, the Aggies found what they were looking for, when a long pass from Nicola Prebble was tapped in behind the California goalkeeper by freshman Emily Chen. Chen’s first career goal as an Aggied tied the score 2-2 with 13 minutes remaining in the game.

With no other scores in the second half, the Aggies found themselves in overtime for the second time this season against the Golden Bears.

But with three minutes remaining in the first overtime period, the Golden Bears scored the final goal of the game, lifting California to a 3-2 win over the Aggies.
