BERKELEY, Calif. -
Claire Dougherty scored the first of her two goals just over a minute into the game and Rachelle Comeau added a pair in the second half as California posted a 6-0 NorPac Field Hockey Conference win over visiting UC Davis on Friday, delaying the Aggies' opportunity to clinch second place in the West Division.
Both teams are now 6-11 with just the Aggies' game against Pacific on Sunday remaining in the regular season. Cal finished its league season with a 2-4 record, the same as Pacific, while UC Davis slipped to 2-3. An Aggie win on Sunday will clinch the West Division's No. 2 seed heading into next week's conference championship tournament at Longwood. If Pacific beats the Aggies, it'll force a three-way tie for second behind unbeaten Stanford, bringing into play tiebreakers.
Cal jumped out to a quick lead as Dougherty scored just 63 seconds into Friday's contest, taking an assist from Comeau. Leading 2-0 early in the second half, Dougherty added her second of the game and third of the season off a penalty corner.
Lara Kruggel added the first of her two consecutive assists, finding Kendra Bills in the 51st minute for a 4-0 lead, then assisting on Comeau's first goal that made it 5-0 in the 62nd. Laura Spellman hit Comeau on a breakaway rush toward the goal in the 69th minute to round at the Bears' scoring.
Danielle Herrington had four saves in goal for UC Davis while Emily Mecke and Casey Wollbrinck each had two shots on goal. Cal outshot UC Davis 14-8.
UC Davis' game on Sunday, in which it will honor its 11-player senior class, starts at 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.
