STANFORD, Calif. — Aggie goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow’s eight-save effort during Saturday night’s contest against No. 18 Stanford was enough to surpass the UC Davis program record for saves in a season. Freshman Emily Chen proved she is a force to be reckoned with after scoring both of UC Davis’ goals on the night, boosting her season goals total to three. But the Aggie offense’s late rally could not overcome the rest of the deficit, lifting Stanford to a 6-2 win over UC Davis.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow’s eight-save effort was enough to put her name in the all-time record books. The previous record for saves in a season was set by Lauren Sawvelle who garnered 131 saves in 2009. As the Aggies get ready for next week’s America East Conference Tournament, Bigelow will have the opportunity to add onto her total. Freshman Emily Chen scored her second and third career goals against the Cardinal to get her name into the record books for goals scored in a game. Chen ranks tied for second in school history alongside 16 other Aggies, including teammate Lauren Mewes who notched two goals against UMass Lowell in 2015.
The Cardinal improve to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in America East play. The Aggies finish the regular season with a 1-16 record and will enter the America East Tournament as the fourth seed in the West Division.
The Cardinal offense came out strong during Saturday night’s match, scoring their first and second goals within 33 seconds of one another with just over 33 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Four minutes later the Aggies would answer back with a goal of their own by freshman Emily Chen. Chen’s second goal of the season was chipped into the right side behind the Stanford goalkeeper.
The Aggie offense continued to threaten on a handful of counter attacks but was unable to convert.
Stanford scored its third goal of the game in the 21st minute to take a 3-1 lead over the Aggies. The Cardinal would score two more goals before the end of the half including a penalty stroke taken in the 24th minute.
Bigelow finished the first half with five saves under her belt.
In the second half, the Cardinal scored their sixth and final goal of the game off a penalty corner opportunity with 28:28 left to play.
As the game entered the final minute of play the Aggie offense ignited a late rally when Emily Chen was able to collect a rebound and put it past the goalkeeper with just 38 seconds remaining in the game. With that, Chen notched her second goal of the game and third career goal as an Aggie.
But UC Davis would not be able to close the rest of the gap on the Cardinal, resulting in a 6-2 win for Stanford over the Aggies.
Bigelow would go on to collect three more saves in the second half for a total of eight saves on the night. Bigelow’s season saves total now resides at 137.
Madison Cohen and Farah Farjood also tallied their first defensive saves of the season.
UC Davis will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts next week to compete in the 2017 America East Conference Tournament, with quarterfinal play beginning on Nov. 2.
