DAVIS, Calif. - - Marissa Hughes, whose two goals at Pacific helped UC Davis rally for a win on Sunday, and Jamie Garcia, who led the Aggies with six points last week, were named the NorPac Conference West Division Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Monday.
Hughes, a senior forward from Vista, was instrumental in the Aggies' opening the NorPac season with a 4-3 overtime win at Pacific on Sunday. She scored her first goal in the 52nd minute on a penalty stroke that tied the game at 2-2. After the Tigers took another lead shortly after, Hughes came to the rescue again, knotting the game with a goal to the left post.
Hughes had a team-high 15 shots in three games last week.
Garcia, a freshman from Fallbrook, finished with two goals and two assists during the Aggies' 2-1 week. She scored her first goal and had an assist in UC Davis' 9-0 rout against Siena last Wednesday before opening Sunday's game at Pacific with another goal.
After Hughes tied the game with her second goal on Sunday, Garcia played a role in the game-winner by Emily Mecke in overtime after taking a shot off a penalty corner that was saved and then rebounded in. Garcia was credited with the assist.
UC Davis had a tough 2-1 loss against Rider last Monday to open its week but then blanked Siena and edged Pacific to put together a two-game winning streak.
The Aggies are off until hosting Cal in another NorPac game on Sunday at noon at Aggie Stadium.
