DAVIS, Calif. - - UC Davis senior Casey Wollbrinck and freshman Jamie Garcia, both instrumental in the Aggies' field hockey upset of Cal on Sunday afternoon, were named the NorPac West Division Defensive and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Both players helped lead UC Davis to its first-ever win over Cal. The Aggies, who led 2-0 over the Bears at halftime, went on to post a 3-1 win at Aggie Stadium, moving them to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the NorPac.
Wollbrinck, from San Jose, helped anchor a UC Davis defense that allowed Cal just four shots in the game, including only one shot on goal. She took also took two shots on the offensive end of the field, one of them on goal. Wollbrinck was the only Aggie field player to play all 70 minutes.
Garcia, a midfielder from Fallbrook, earned Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week and the third time this year. She earned the recognition this week after scoring a goal in the 28th minute that gave UC Davis a 2-0 lead.
Garcia has three goals and 12 points for UC Davis this season. She shared this week's award with Stanford midfielder Maddie Secco.
The Aggies, who have a three-game winning streak, will travel to face No. 13 Stanford on Friday night.
