STANFORD, Calif. - Beverly Vatananugulkit had five birdies on her way to a par-71 while freshman Paige Lee played a steady round while picking up two, as the No. 37 UC Davis women's golf team finished in second place after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course on Saturday.
Three Aggies are among the top 13 places and all five UC Davis players are in the top 35. Vatananugulkit is tied for eighth while Lee is tied for 11th after shooting 72. Sophomore Betty Chen fired a 73 and is tied for 13th. Sophomore Andrea Wong is tied for 26th after her 75 while Blair Lewis shot 76 and is tied for 34th.
Eight teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50, including the No. 9 Cardinal and also No. 16. Oregon, are participating in the 36-hole tournament. UC Davis fired a 7-over 291 in the opening round and trail Stanford by just four shots. San Jose State (292) is third while No. 42 Denver (295) and Oregon (296) are also in the top five.
The tournament is the first of the spring season for UC Davis which ended its fall season on the same Stanford Golf Course with the Stanford Intercollegiate.
Vatananugulkit led UC Davis during its strong start on Saturday. Starting on the fifth hole, she posted birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 seventh holes to quickly move to 2 under. Three birdies over a four-hole stretch on the course's back nine put her 3 under after she had gone back to even. Vatananugulkit eventually came in at par for the day.
In addition to her two birdies, Lee had 13 pars. She birdied the par-3 eighth hole and was 1 under after nine holes. She added another birdie on the 18th hole on her way to her 1-over total. Chen had three birdies during her round of 73, all of them over a five hole run between the eighth and 13th holes.
Wong carded two birdies and played the front nine at Stanford just a shot over par while Lewis was even on the back nine while picking up four birdies.
UNLV's Dana Finkelstein and Lucia Gutierrez of Cal each shot 69 on Saturday and hold a one-shot lead over five players.
The teams will play a shotgun final round beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Aggies will play with Stanford and San Jose State.
