STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Demi Runas' 2-under 69 put her in a tie for second place at Stanford's Peg Barnard Invitational, and lead the 10th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team into seventh place after one round Saturday at Stanford Golf Course.
The tournament is the first of the spring season for UC Davis which shot an 12-over 296 and trails first-place Cal by 11 shots. Eighteenth-ranked Stanford (289) is four shots off the pace while Boston College (290) is in the mix as well. Second-ranked Washington (295), Rollins College (Fla.) and San Jose State are each tied for fourth.
Freshman Betty Chen also enjoyed a solid first round for the Aggies, firing a 2-over 73 which tied her for 14th. Sophomores Beverly Vatananugulkit and Blair Lewis each had 77's and are tied for 39th while senior Amy Simanton finished with a 79 and is tied for 48th.
Runas, who trails Megan Osland of San Jose State by a stroke, got off to a good start on Saturday. She birdied the par-5 1st hole and the par-4 2nd to quickly move into red numbers. She never drifted above par, making the turn 2 under and then posting par on every hole on the back nine.
She had two bogeys on her front nine, but erased them with her second set of back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes.
Chen, starting on the third hole, was 3 over after two holes but gained a shot back with a birdie on the par-3 eighth. She played the course's back ninea hot under par before a late bogey brought her in with a 73,
Vatananugulkit had par on her first hole but then went 6 over on the next eight before making the turn and rebounding to shoot even over the last nine, highlighting the run with a back-to-birdies on the 11th and 12th holes.
Lewis began well with five straight pars and was even through eight holes before carding 6 over on the last 11 holes, to match Vatananugulkit with a 77. Simanton had two early pars in her round and had two rounds to highlight her day.
The final round will be played Sunday.
