STANFORD, Calif. - Demi Runas tied for second and freshman Betty Chen tied for eighth as the No. 10 UC Davis women's golf rallied to finish third at the Peg Barnard Invitational on Sunday at Stanford Golf Course.

Freshman Raegan Bremer, playing as an individual, tied for seventh for her best finish as an Aggie.

The Aggies opened the day in seventh place but shot a 293 team score - just nine shots over par - as they surged to finish 21-over 589 for the 36-hole tournament. The host Cardinal, ranked 18th, won their own event by 14 strokes at 1-over 280, beating rival Cal, ranked 47th.

UC Davis finished ahead of second-ranked Washington, which was fourth, a shot back of the Aggies.

Runas started the final round in second place and maintained her spot with a par-71, finishing 2 under for the weekend. Chen had a strong finish as well, shooting 72 and tying for eighth at 3 over.

Sophomores Beverly Vatananugulkit and Blair Lewis each carded a 75, tying for 35th at 10 over, and Amy Simanton finished with a 78, tying for 49th at 15 over.

"The Peg Barnard was a good event to start the spring season," said Aggie coach Anna Temple. " For our first event back on the course since October, there were a lot of really great things occurring. We have some things to work on for our next event, but it was a good start."

Runas had four birdies and four bogeys in her round, rallying from 2 over after 10 holes to get back to even. She needed a birdie on the par-5 7th, her final hole of the day, to come in with a 71. Chen was 3 over after five holes but then birdied three straight on the back nine. She was 1 over the rest of the day.

Vatananugulkit and Lewis each had two birdies to help highlight their rounds while Simanton had a pair as well.

Bremer had an impressive tournament, shooting 75 on Saturday and then collecting six birdies on Sunday on her way to a 69. She had three in a row on the course's first three holes and had a trio Stanford Golf Course's back nine.

Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse had a memorable day, shooting 9 under on the front nine and finish with a 10-under 61. She was 12 under overall winning by 10 strokes over Runas and Regina DeGuzman of San Jose State.

UC Davis will be in action next at the Cal Classic on Feb. 25-26.
