PLEASANTON, Calif. - Senior Demi Runas fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for second while senior Amy Simanton had a 72, as No. 11 UC Davis finished the first round of the inaugural Cal Classic on Monday at Ruby Hill Golf Club in third place.
UC Davis shot a 10-over 298 over the first 18 holes, tying with No. 13 Stanford just two shots behind No. 14 Arizona, which carded a 296 team score. San Diego State (300), Coastal Carolina, No. 39 Cal (302) and No. 40 UNLV (302) are also challenging among the leaders in the 11-team field.
Simanton is tied for fifth while freshman Raegan Bremer, coming off an seventh-place finish at Stanford last week, shot a 76 and is tied for 17th. Sophomore Blair Lewis is tied for 37th after her 79 while freshman Betty Chen posted an 80 and is tied for 43rd.
Starting on the 10th hole, Runas had three birdies, two bogeys and four pars over her first nine holes to make her turn a shot under par. She was even before a birdie on the par-5 4th hole put her back in the red which is where she finished. Runas, ranked 11th by Golfstat, is tied with Laura Blanco of Arizona State and Paige Spiranic of San Diego State. They trail the Sun Devils' Noemi Jimenez who had a 4-under 68.
Simanton started off strong with three consecutive birdies on par-4 holes and stayed 3 under until a bogey on her ninth hole put her 2 under. She had seven pars and two bogeys on her back nine to play the round at par.
Bremer had 14 pars in her round, Lewis was just 2 over over her final nine holes, and Chen played her back nine just 1 over.
Teams will play the shotgun final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. UC Davis will play with Stanford and Arizona State, teeing off on the first hole.
