PLEASANTON, Calif. - Seniors Demi Runas and Amy Simanton tied for second and sixth, respectively, at the Cal Classic on Tuesday to help the No. 11 UC Davis women's golf team finish in fourth place at the inaugural tournament at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.
Runas fired a 1-over 73 on the 6,304-yard course to complete the 36-hole tournament at par while Simanton carded a 74 and was just 2 over. The standout senior duo led an Aggie squad which also had sophomore Blair Lewis shoot a 75 to tie for 29th at 10 over, freshman Raegan Bremer finish with an 80 to tie for 36th at 12 over, and freshman Betty Chen shoot 79 to tie for 45th at 15 over.
UC Davis had a team score of 13-over 301 on Tuesday, placing fourth at 23-over 599. Thirteenth-ranked Stanford won the 11-team tournament at 10 over after shooting an even-par 288 in the final round. Fourteenth-ranked Arizona State was second at 16 over while San Diego State took third at 21 over.
First-day leader Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State, ranked 37th nationally by Golfstat, shot a 71 on Tuesday and was 5 under for the tournament, posting a five-shot win over Dana Finkelstein of UNLV, Mariko Tumangan of Stanford, and Runas.
Runas, ranked 11th by Golfstat, had a very consistent round on Tuesday, posting seven pars, a birdie and just one bogey on her front nine. She strung together six straight pars on the back before finishing with a birdie and two bogeys. Runas had an impressive 1-under 71 on Monday.
Simanton started quickly with a birdie on the par-4 1st hole and had seven pars and two bogeys before covering the final nine holes with eight pars and just one bogey. She opened her event with a solid 72 in the first round.
Lewis improved her opening-round score by four shots with her round of 75. Starting on the third hole, she had an early birdie to counter a first-hole bogey and then carded nine consecutive pars to help highlight her day. Bremer had a birdie on the par-4 7th hole during her round while Chen opened her day with eight straight pars.
The fourth-place finish was the fifth top-four placing in six tournaments during the 2012-13 season. The Aggies will return to action on Monday, traveling to the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at San Jose State.
