UC Davis Rallies into Second at Juli Inkster

DAVIS, Calif. - Behind a 1-under 71 from Blair Lewis and a 72 from fifth-place Paige Lee, the No. 35 UC Davis women's golf team posted the best second-round score on Monday afternoon, rallying into a tie for second after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at San Jose State.

UC Davis was in fourth place after shooting an 11-over 299 in the first round but then fired 291 in the afternoon - best among the 13 teams entered - to move into a tie for second with San Francisco at 14 over. The two teams trail No. 20 Oregon by just two shots and are six in front of fourth-place San Jose State.

Lewis and Lee were the two leaders for the Aggies in the second round. Lewis opened with a 79 but then carded UC Davis' low score for the day with her impressive 71. Lewis is tied for 20th at 6 over.Lee had back-to-back par rounds and is in fifth place.

Sophomore Andrea Wong shot par in the second round as well and is tied for 13th at 4 over. Betty Chen is tied for 28th after shooting 76 in each round and senior Jessica Chulya is tied for 33rd at 9 over.

Lee was 3 over after nine holes in the morning but then posted five birdies, two pars and two bogeys to play her back nine 3 under. She nearly duplicated that effort in the second round, playing her first nine 2 over but then collected two birdies during a 2-under back nine.

Lee is just two shots behind Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton. Only five of the 69 players are at par or better through 36 holes.



Wong opened her day with a 76 but then had three birdies and played her last nine holes a shot under par in the second round en route to a 72. Lewis rebounded nicely from her first-round 79, picking up a trio of birdies and just two bogeys in her second-round 71. Her score was tied for the second-lowest among all players on Monday.

Chen was 4 over with 10 holes to play in the second round and finished strong with 10 straight pars. She had a birdie-3 on the fifth hole as she played the last 10 holes of the first round at par also. Chulya had three birdies on Monday, playing the front nine of the Almaden Golf and Country Club's course even during the morning round.

UC Davis will play with Oregon and San Francisco during Tuesday's final round which is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
