UC Davis Posts Top Score Of The Day At SJSU

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Paced by rounds of par 72 from senior Amy Simanton and Jessica Chulya, the No. 13 UC Davis women's golf team posted the best score of the day by seven shots on Tuesday, finishing fifth at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational hosted by San Jose State.

Senior Demi Runas tied for fifth to lead the Aggie players in the final standings.

UC Davis, which began the day in 10th place, moved up the leaderboard after a 4-over 292 total. It was the fifth-best score overall in the 54-hole tournament which featured 14 teams, four of them in the top 20. Runas and freshman Betty Chen each carded 74's while freshman Raegan Bremer had a 78 on Tuesday.

Ninth-ranked Washington shot an 11-over 299 team score in the final round, the next best tally after UC Davis. No other team in the field broke 300 on Tuesday. Fourteenth-ranked Stanford finished 14-over 878 to win the team title by 11 shots over Washington (889). North Carolina State and Cal, ranked 17th and 41st, respectively, were 33 over and tied for third, six shots ahead of UC Davis.

Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse carded a three-round total of 4-under 212, winning by six shots over Regina DeGuzman of San Jose State.

Sianton had three birdies on Tuesday and played each side of the 6,108-yard Almaden Golf and Country Club course even. It was her best round of the event by four shots. Chulya was eight shots better than her previous best this week, also collecting three birdies. She covered the front nine 2 under with a pair of birdies and no bogeys.

Simanton tied for 20th at 11 over while Chulya tied for 39th at 17 over.

Runas, ranked 13th by Golfstat, had two birdies to post her second straight round of 74. She totaled just 5 over par for the tournament. Chen had a birdie on each side of the course, playing the back nine holes even, and tying for 27th at 13 overall. Bremer had just two bogeys on Almaden's back nine, tying for 36th overall at 16 over.

The fifth-place finish marked UC Davis' sixth top-five finish in six tournaments this season. The Aggies will return to action on Mar. 25-27 when they take part in the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawaii.
