LAHAINA, Hawaii - Betty Chen is in second place and Paige Lee is ninth as the No. 37 UC Davis women's golf team moved up a spot on the leaderboard into third after Tuesday's second round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on The Bay Course on Maui.

The duo helped UC Davis improve its first-round score by two shots. The Aggies fired an 8-over 296 and are 18 over with one round remaining. Fifteenth-ranked Pepperdine is 1 over and holds a three-stroke lead over No. 10 Washington. UC Davis is eight shots clear of fourth-place Santa Clara, which is 26 over.

"I'm really proud of how the team finished today," said head coach Anna Temple. "We had an opportunity to give up a few more shots and the team responded with birdies down the stretch. While Betty and Paige again led the team, everyone really fought hard and minimized the mistakes. Tomorrow is the final round and we are excited to go out and compete again on this course."

Chen had an impressive round of 70 on Monday and played a steady round on Tuesday with her 72. Starting the shotgun round on The Bay Course's first hole, Chen rattled off 11 straight birdies to begin her day. She bogeyed the par-3 12th hole but got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 15th. Pars the rest of the way helped balance her scorecard.

Lee's 73 was a stroke better than her opening-round score. She posted pars on her first nine holes and was 2 over later with four holes to play, but she had back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes as she eventually finished 1 over.

Vatananugulkit was two shots better on Tuesday than on Monday, turning in a 3-over scorecard with two late birdies on the 15th and 17th holes. Wong improved by three shots, battling back from early hole with three birdies on her way to a 76. Lewis had a birdie on the eighth hole and played the front nine just 3 over.

Fifteen teams, including four in Golfstat's top 50, are competing in the three-day tournament which concludes with the final round on Wednesday. UC Davis will play the third round with Pepperdine, Washington and Santa Clara beginning at 10:45 a.m. (PDT).
