LAHAINA, Hawaii - Sparked by three birdies, sophomore Blair Lewis played her final 14 holes on Tuesday three shots under par, shooting a 1-under 71 in the second round to help keep No. 13 UC Davis in ninth place at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapulua Resort's Bay Course on Maui.
Lewis's impressive round jumped her 29 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd place at 5-over 149. It also helped the Aggies, who had an 8-over 296, cut five strokes from their opening-day score.
Sophomore Beverly Vatananugulkit remained among the tournament leaders, shooting 74 and ending the day tied for 11th at 1 over. Senior Demi Runas shot 75 and is tied for 42nd, seven shots over par, while fellow senior Amy Simanton is tied for 49th at 9 over after carding a 77. Junior Jessica Chulya had UC Davis's second-biggest improvement on the day, carding a 76, five shots better than her opening-round score. Chulya's tied for 72nd at 13 over.
Tenth-ranked Washington moved into the team lead after shooting 2-under 286 on Tuesday. The Huskies are 3 under 573 overall and lead No. 11 UCLA (578) by five shots. First-day leader Pepperdine (581), ranked 31st, is third while No. 17 Arizona State (582) and No. 34 Denver (591) occupy the next two spots.
UC Davis trails No. 39 Oregon by just one shot and has four teams within four shots right behind it.
Starting on the 10th hole, Lewis enjoyed a strong effort on Tuesday, even after two bogeys over her first four holes put her 2 over. She turned the tide with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole and then matched that with a birdie on the par-5 1st. A string of pars set her up for another birdie, this time on the par-4 7th hole while helping her play the course's front nine two shots below par. She had a seven-shot improvement from Monday.
Vatananugulkit, who shot 71 on Monday, bogeyed four of her first five holes but then played her last 13 holes 1 under with 12 pars and a birdie, coming in with a 74. Runas had three birdies in her round of 76 while Chuyla had 12 pars and birdie during hers. Simanton had a birdie on each side of the 6,036-yard course in her round of 77..
Denver's Tonje Daffinrud shot a 7-under 65 and holds a one-shot lead at 7-under 137. Grace Na of Pepperdine is in second while two others players are four shots off the lead.
