UC Davis In Sixth At Pacific Coast Intercollegiate

April 4, 2011

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. - Freshman Jessica Chulya shot back-to-back rounds of 3-over 75 on Monday and is tied for 13th for the 17th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team, leading the Aggies into sixth place after two rounds of the inaugural Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links.

UC Davis is co-hosting the tournament with Oregon at the scenic seaside layout. Ten of the 12 teams in the 54-hole event are ranked in Golfstat's top 100, including six in the top 50.

The Aggies shot 21-over 309 in the first round before coming back in the afternoon and firing 302. UC Davis is at 611, 15 shots off the pace being set by No. 27 Texas A&M which shot 10-over 298 in both rounds for a 596 total, five shots better than Long Beach State and No. 37 Oregon.

Colorado (604), ranked 31st, is in fourth place while Texas Tech (606) rounds out the top five.

Chulya is tied for 13th at 6-over 150 to lead UC Davis. Senior Chelsea Stelzmiller is tied for 21st at 152 while senior Alice Kim is tied for 31st at 155. Sophomores Amy Simanton and Demi Runas are both tied for 38th at 156.

Texas A&M's Natalie Reeves, who had a 1-under 71 in the second round, finished the day at par-144 and has a one-shot advantage over Lauren Weaver of Northwestern who highlighted her day with a 69 in the first round.

Chulya had three birdies in her second round to help her shoot a second straight 75. Kim opened her day with an 81 but battled back for an impressive 74 in the second, combining 14 pars and a birdie to help.

Stelzmiller had 76 in both rounds, picking up a trio of birdies in the second round, while Simanton had 14 pars and Runas had 13 as they each shot 77 in the afternoon.

"I think we were lucky with the conditions today," said Aggie coach Anne Walker. "Tomorrow the wind is going to pick up and that's going to make it interesting. And I still believe there are 10 teams that can vie for this title tomorrow, especially when the conditions pick up.

Teams will play an 8 a.m. shotgun round on Tuesday to finish out the tournament.
