SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - An early eagle set the stage for Betty Chen's 1-under 72 on Monday as the No. 37 UC Davis women's golf team put itself in position to win a fifth straight title by taking a 12-stroke lead after the Big West Championship's second round at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Aggies shot a 5-over 297 and are 7-over 591 heading into to Tuesday's final round. Cal State Northridge moved into second place at 19 over while UC Irvine is a distant third at 27 over.
Chen's outstanding round put her into a tie for second at par with teammate and first-day leader Beverly Vatananugulkit, and also Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton. The trio is three shots back of Clariss Guce of Northridge who shot 69 and is 3 under.
Freshman Paige Lee joined Vatananugulkit with a 74 in the second round and is tied for fifth at 2 over. Sophomore Blair Lewis is tied for eighth at 5 over after carding a 77 while sophomore Andrea Wong shot 78 and is tied for 19th at 10 over.
The Aggies are trying to become just the second team in Big West history to win at least five straight women's golf championships. They're also within striking distance of claiming the medalist for the fifth consecutive year.
Chen made her run for the top by playing the front nine three shots under par. A birdie on the par-4 first hole gave her momentum which gained steam with her eagle on the par-5 fifth. She was 2 over on the back nine, matching the 72 that Vatananugulkit fired on Sunday.
Vatananugulkit had three birdies during her second round and was 1 under at her turn before also playing the back nine 2 over. She captured medalist honors in 2012. Lee shot 74 for the second straight day, capitalizing on four birdies over a six-hole span that pushed her to 3 under after 10 holes. Lee was 3 over on the back nine.
Lewis was 2 over after six holes but then got back to even by posting birdies on the par-5 seventh and 10th holes. She helped highlight her day by covering her first nine holes just a shot over par. Wong opened her day with a birdie and had back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes as she made her turn just 1 over.
The Aggies have dominated their Big West competition during their previous four championships, winning each of the four titles by at least 14 strokes.
UC Davis will try to win the Big West title and accompanying berth in the NCAA Championships when it tees off the final round beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The Aggies will play with Northridge and UC Irvine.
