SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Senior Demi Runas and freshman Andrea Wong each shot 73's on Monday and are 1-2, respectively, in the player standings while helping the No. 16 UC Davis women's golf team open a 16-stroke lead after two rounds of the Big West Championships at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Aggies shot a 12-over 304 on Tuesday as teams battled increased winds on the 6,196-yard course. All five UC Davis players are among the top 10 places. Defending medalist Beverly Vatananugulkit is tied for fourth, freshman Betty Chen is ninth and senior Amy Simanton is tied for 10th.
Runas is 1-under 145 after the second round and leads Wong by two shots. Vatanangulkit is 4 over, Chen is 7 over and Simanton is 8 over.
Three-time defending champion UC Davis blitzed the course on Sunday for a 3-under 289 but found conditions much tougher a day later. The Aggies are 9-over overall while Long Beach State is in second at 25 over. UC Irvine is third in the eight-team tournament at 34 over.
Vatananugulkit, who shot a 4-under 69 in the first round, carded an 81 on Monday, Chen had a 77 and Simanton posted an 81.
"We got off to a good start today but didn't keep it going on the back nine," said head coach Anna Temple. "The wind was up today so the course played a bit differently and we could have adjusted a bit better.
"Demi and Andrea had very solid rounds of even par," she added. "We are looking forward to having another opportunity to play this course and make up some of the shots that we let go of today."
Runas was solid through most of her round, picking up birdies on the 6th and 10th holes to help her go to 2 under after 13 holes. She didn't card a bogey until the 14th hole and was later 1 over until a birdie on the 18th hole gave her a 73. Wong's 73 was sparked by an opening-hole birdie and an impressive eagle on the par-5 5th. She played the front nine a shot under par.
Chen had birdies on two of her first three holes, including the par-5 1st, and played each side of the course two shots above par. Vatanangulkit was just 3 over on her first nine holes while Simanton played each of the front nine and back nine 4 over.
The Aggies will be trying Tuesday for their fourth straight Big West title in six seasons of conference membership. They'll tee of beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and will play with Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
