DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis finished the second round of the NCAA Div. I Women's Golf West Regional at Tumble Creek Club in 11th place on Friday but are just three strokes away from coveted eighth place which would ensure the Aggies a berth in the NCAA Finals later this month.
The 37th-ranked and 13th-seeded Aggies shot a 20-over 308 team score in Friday's round and are in 11th place at 32-over 608. Iowa State is currently in eighth place, just three shots in front of UC Davis while Wisconsin (606) is in ninth and Wake Forest (607) is in 10th. GRU Augusta is three strokes back of the Aggies. Just six shots separate sixth through 11th place.
The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Finals in Tulsa, Okla., on May 20-23.
Freshman Paige Lee had a 4-over 76 to pace UC Davis during the second round and is tied for 30th with teammate Betty Chen who shot 77. Both players are 7 over through 36 holes. Junior Blair Lewis - who opened the regional with a hole-in-one on Thursday - is 9 over after her round of 77 and is tied for 45th with sophomore teammate Andrea Wong who carded a 78. Junior Beverly Vatananugulkit is tied for 100th after shooting 83 on Friday.
The top three teams in the regional have gained some separation from the rest of the field. Top-ranked USC and No. 6 Arizona State are tied for the lead at 2 over, while host and 11th-ranked Washington is third at 4 over. Seventh-ranked Oklahoma is 10 over and in fourth place, six shots behind the Huskies.
Kyung Kim of USC and SooBin Kim of Washington are tied for the individual lead at 4 under. They own a one-shot lead over two players.
Lee saved her best golf on Friday for her final 11 holes after starting 5 over after the first seven. She had a birdie on the par-5 18th hole and then another on the par-4 first after making her turn. She played her back nine even to finish with her 76. Chen's 77 was highlighted by three birdies, including a pair of birdies on the par-5 15th and 18th holes. She had the other on the par-4 fifth hole.
Lewis was even after nine holes, picking up a birdie on the par-4 12th hole and also on the 15th. She was 5 over on her back nine. Wong birdied the last two par-5 holes on the course's back nine and was just 1 over after nine holes before eventually coming in with a 78. Vatananugulkit highlighted her day with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
"Today was a decent day for the team," said head coach Anna Temple. "We put ourselves in good position at the turn but let a couple shots slip away on our back nine. We are in a good place heading into the final round and if we can take care of what we can control, we can put a solid round together."
The Aggies will look to make a run for the NCAA Finals with a surge in Saturday's final round. They'll tee off at 7:30 a.m. and play with Wake Forest and GRU Augusta.
