NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Demi Runas fired a 2-under par 70 on Friday afternoon and No. 16 UC Davis finished in a three-way tie for sixth as the NCAA Div. I Women's Golf Central Regional tightened up with one round remaining at the University of Oklahoma.
The Aggies shot 12-over 300 and are 15 over after 36 holes, tied with No. 16 Texas Tech and Mississippi State. The top eight teams after Saturday's final round will qualify for the NCAA Finals later in May. Michigan State and North Carolina State are tied for ninth, just a shot behind UC Davis while TCU and Wisconsin are also within striking distance of the top eight. Currently, six shots separate third through 12th place.
Runas paced the Aggies on Friday with a six-shot improvement over her opening round. She vaulted into a tie for 16th place at 2 over. Freshmen Andrea Wong and Betty Chen each carded 75's and are tied for 30th at 4 over while sophomore Beverly Vatananugulkit had an 80 and is tied for 39th at 5 over. Senior Amy Simanton is tied for 105th after shooting 82.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma is 7 under and has a six-shot lead while playing on its own Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club course. Duke, ranked third, is in second place at 1 under while No. 9 Florida is third at 13 over.
Runas played each side of the course a shot below par, carding six birdies overall. She had three over a four-hole span late in her round. Runas is an eight-way tie for 16th place. Wong had four birdies, highlighting her round by playing the front nine just 1 over.
Chen matched Wong's scorecard by playing her final nine holes just a shot above par. She had two birdies on Friday. Vatananugulkit opened the regional with a 3-under 69 but found just one birdie in the second round. Simanton also had just one birdie, picking that up on the par-3 6th hole.
"Today was an up-and-down round for us," said head coach Anna Temple. "We had a lot of great play mixed with a few unnecessary mistakes. We have an opportunity in the final round for all five of our players to play well. It will be a very exciting and competitive round!"
First-day leader Emily Collins of Oklahoma maintained her hold on first place and is 7 under. She has a one-shot lead over Ally McDonald of Mississippi State and at least four shots over the rest of the field.
The Aggies are in their fourth straight regional and looking for their third-ever appearance in the NCAA Finals. UC Davis will look to qualify for the finals when it tees off at 5:30 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday. The Aggies will play with Michigan State and Mississippi State.
