FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Weather got the best of second-round action at the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic at Colorado State on Monday with the UC Davis women's golf team sitting in 10th place after the tournament's first day.
UC Davis shot a 15-over 303 in the first round and was more than half way through its afternoon round before storms stopped action for the day. Teams will complete their second round on Tuesday morning before moving on to the final 18 holes.
Juniors Beverly Vatananugulkit and Blair Lewis paced the Aggies with opening rounds of 3-over 75 while sophomore Andrea Wong, who had a 77 in the morning round, is 8 over and tied for 29th to lead UC Davis at the point of suspension.
Vatananugulkit is currently tied for 40th at 10 over while Lewis is a shot back and tied for 48th. Freshman Paige Lee opened her Aggie career with a 76 and is also tied for 40th while sophomore Betty Chen is 13 over and tied for 59th after carding a 79 in the first round.
California is 10 over and leads second place New Mexico by a shot while UNLV and Colorado are tied for third, five shots off the lead. Illinois is 16 over and in fifth place, 12 shots ahead of the next closest team. UC Davis is 37 over par.
Vatananugulkit had three birdies in the first round today and played the back nine of the course even. Eight pars on the front nine helped key Lewis' strong opening round. Lee debuted with two birdies in the first round, Wong also had a pair and Chen was just two over on the front nine.
Seventeen teams are entered in the season-opening tournament.
