FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Beverly Vatananugulkit and Betty Chen each fired par-72s in the final round of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Tuesday, helping the UC Davis women's golf team finish with its best round of the tournament.
UC Davis, which finished Monday's suspended second round on Tuesday with a team score of 28-over 316, posted a 19-shot improvement over that with its 9-over 297. The Aggies finished 11th in the season-opening tournament which was won by Cal.
Vatananugulkit and Chen led the way for UC Davis over the final 18 holes, each putting together impressive rounds. Vatanangulkit, who led the Aggies with a 30th-place tie in the individual standings, opened her third round with a bogey but then played the remainder of the day a shot under par with 16 pars and a birdie. She was 11 over for the tournament.
Chen was equally impressive, starting her round with three straight birdies to quickly move to 3 under. She then had seven straight pars before eventually coming in with a 72. She tied for 39th place at 14 over.
Sophomore Andrea Wong paced the Aggies in the second round with a 75 before coming back with a 76 in the last round. She had six birdies over her final 36 holes and tied for 33rd at 12 over. Junior Blair Lewis had a pair of birdies and and 11 pars while shooting a 77 over the final 18 holes and coming in tied for 53rd at 18 over.
Freshman Paige Lee made her Aggie debut, tying for 58th at 19 over after shooting a 77 in Tuesday's last round. She had a nice start to the round, picking up birdies on the 12th and 14th holes and playing her first eight holes a pair of shots below bar.
Dana Finkelstein of UNLV won medalist honors by a stroke, completing the 54-hole tournament at 4 under. Cal was 9 over as a team, beating Colorado by nine shots.
UC Davis returns to action on Sept. 20-21 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
