ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Sophomore Alice Kim birdied two of her final six holes to post a 2-under 71 on Saturday to place sixth, pacing the UC Davis women's golf team to a strong fourth-place finish at the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
Kim ended the 54-hole tournament at 1-under 218, five shots behind winner Jodi Ewart of New Mexico. The tournament was played at the par-73, 6167-yard UNM Championship Course.
Aggie sophomore Chelsea Stelzmiller followed her 69 in Friday's second round with a 74 over the final 18 holes, earning a top-10 finish by tying for eighth at 1-over 220. Brittany Smith had a 75, tying for 18th at 5 over, Katie Sisler posted a final-round 80 and tied for 45th at 13 over, and Kimberly Johnson shot 83 to tie for 88th.
The Aggies, who had a team score of 8-over 300 on Saturday, were a solid fourth in the 16-team field at 18-over 894. Host New Mexico had a 5-under 287 in the last round to post the only score in the red for the tournament. The Lobos concluded at 4-under 872, good enough for a four-shot victory over Pepperdine. UNLV took third at 13 over while Colorado State was fifth, four shots behind the Aggies.
Stelzmiller highlighted her round with four birdies, Kim and Smith each had three, and Johnson and Sisler each had one.
The tournament - played at the site of the 2008 NCAA Division I Championships in which the Aggies finished 21st - was the first of two during a busy opening-week for UC Davis. It will continue its early action by competing in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate the Denver University on Monday through Wednesday.
