WOLCOTT, Colo. - Freshman Paige Lee and Betty Chen are tied for 11th, and sophomore Andrea Wong is tied for 15th to help lead the UC Davis women's golf team during Monday's first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club.
The Aggies are in their fourth straight Golfweek event which brings together 18 teams from 18 different conferences. UC Davis shot a 16-over 304 team score on the first day and trails Denver (303) by just one stroke and second-place TCU (301) by three. Pepperdine (289) opened a 12-shot lead on the rest of the field.
Lee and Chen led the Aggies with 3-over 75s in the first round while Wong was just one shot off that pace, firing a 76. Junior Beverly Vatananugulkit and senior Jessica Chulya each carded 78s and are tied for 30th.
Three Pepperdine players - Alina Ching, Marissa Chow and Grace Na - shot 71s on Monday and share the led over four players one stroke behind.
Lee had six pars and a birdie on her front nine in the first round but was 3 over at the turn. She played a solid back nine, countering two bogeys with a pair of birdies and five pars to post her 75. Chen scrambled on the front as well, making her turn four shots over par, but then played the back nine impressively at 1 under. She birdied a pair of par-3 holes to help her strong finish.
Wong was 2 over on each side. She had just seven pars and combined those with four birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey to help her move among the tournament leaders.
Vatananugulkit started her day well, posting two birdies over her first nine holes to go to just 1 over, but gave five shots back the rest of the way to finish with a 78. Chulya had two double-bogeys on the front nine - her only two scores that weren't par - before playing the final nine just two shots above par.
UC Davis will begin second-round action on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. (Pacific).
