Simanton Tied For First At Northwestern Tournament

Demi Runas is in the top 10 after two rounds at Northwestern.

GOLF, Ill. - Senior Amy Simanton carded six birdies while posting a career-best tying 68 during Monday's second round, while grabbing a share of first for the No. 19 UC Davis women's golf team which finished the first day of Northwestern's Windy City Collegiate Classic in fifth place.

The Aggies, who had rounds of 297 and 5-over 293, are 10 shots off the pace behing set by second-ranked Washington. UC Davis is 14-over 590 through 36 holes while the Huskies are at 580. Sixth-ranked Arizona is second (582), No. 22 Iowa State (586) is third and No. 26 Notre Dame is fourth (588).

Simanton, who is tied atop the leaderboard with Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame, is one of two Aggies in the top 10. Senior Demi Runas, medalist at last week's Golfweek Conference Challenge, is tied for seventh at 1-over 145.

Beverly Vatananugulkit is tied for 31st at 6 over, freshman Andrea Wong is tied for 53rd at 10 over, and freshman Betty Chen is tied for 59th at 11 over.

Ten teams currently ranked in Golfstat's top 50 are entered in the event, including No. 1 Texas Tech which sits eighth (598).

Simanton, who opened her day with a 73, had three birdies over the first nine holes of her second round and then had three consecutive birdies down the stretch to help her move to 4 under. Her round tied rounds of 68 she posted as a freshman in Hawaii and last season at Las Vegas.

Simanton and Weaver are two shots ahead of two other players. Only four competitors are below par in the 81-player field.

Runas had two early birdies in her round and was 2 under until a pair of bogeys over her last four holes brought her in at par in the morning. She had two birdies in the afternoon, helping her shoot 73.



Vatananugulkit had matching 75's but had a scrambling one in the second round when over a seven-hole stretch to end the day she had four birdies and three bogeys. She played the Glen View Club Course's front nine 1 under during the second round.

Wong had two birdies in her first round and 13 pars in the second, finishing with 77 in each round. Chen, playing her first tournament of the season, highlighted her day with consecutive birdies in the morning and then played her back nine just one over in the afternoon. She shot 77 and 78, respectively.

UC Davis will play with Northwestern and Iowa State in Tuesday's final round, beginning at 5:15 a.m. (Pacific).
