SAMMAMISH, Wash. - Demi Runas is tied for 11th and fellow senior Amy Simanton is tied for 15th as No. 7 UC Davis opened the 54-hole Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by the University of Washington on Monday in a tie for fourth place.
Runas, the Big West Golfer of the Month for September, scrambled early before finishing with a 2-over 74 at Sahalee Country Club while Simanton finished strong to post a 75.
The Aggies combined for a 14-over 302 and are tied for fourth with No. 39 Oregon and San Jose State. They trail the host Huskies, ranked sixth, who finished 5 over and are four shots in front of UC Irvine (297). Stanford, ranked 40th, is three shots ahead of UC Davis in third at 11-over 299.
Runas had an eventful front nine, opening with two quick birdies to go 2 under after just two holes. However, a double-bogey on the third hole and bogeys on two of her next four put her 2 over. She rallied to birdie the par-3 ninth hole and then had eight pars and just one bogey on the back nine to finish with a 74.
Simanton was 4 over after nine holes and then had a pair of bogeys over her next six holes to jump to 6 over. However, three consecutive birdies to end her day, on the par-4 16th, par-3 17th and par-5 18th, brought her in with a 75.
Wong was just 1 over her final nine holes, highlighting her 76 with a birdie on No. 18. She had six straight pars on her front nine. Bremer, making her Aggie debut, birdied her first collegiate hole and added another on the sixth hole before making her turn a shot in the red. She was 6 over on the back, carding a 77. Vatananugulkit had 12 birdies during her round of 78.
Washington has the three top players after the first round. Cyd Okino fired a 70 while teammates SooBin Kim and Charlotte Thomas are one back and tied for second.
The Aggies will tee off the second round at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and play with UNLV, Gonzaga and Washington.
