SAMMAMISH, Wash. - The No. 7 UC Davis women's golf team, led by a 3-over 75 from senior Demi Runas, earned its third runner-up tournament finish on Wednesday with a strong showing at the University of Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitaitonal.
Runas posted her third straight top-10 finish, placing seventh overall at 6-over 222. Freshman Andrea Wong had her best finish during her new Aggie career, tying for 11th at 8-over after her final-round 77.
Senior Amy Simanton and sophomore Beverly Vatananugulkit each had 77's on Wednesday, tying for 13th at 11 over and 16th at 12 over, respectively. Freshman Raegan Bremer concluded her first UC Davis event, shooting a 78 and tying for 25th at 17-over.
UC Davis, which is enjoying its highest-ever ranking from Golfstat in its initial 2012-13 poll, trailed only No. 6 Washington in the final standings. UC Davis had an 18-over 306 in the last round, ending at 36-over 900 for the 54-hole tournament.
Washington posted a 14-stroke win over the Aggies after its 300 on Wednesday left them at 22-over 886 overall. Stanford, ranked 40th, took third at 41 over while UC Irvine and No. 39 Oregon tied for fourth in the 16-team tournament at 54 over.
The Aggies earned their third second-place finish in four tournaments this fall. They opened with a tie for second at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at New Mexico and also had a second-place finish at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Runas opened her last round at Washington with 11 consecutive pars and then had three bogeys over her next four holes before finishing with four straight pars en route to a 75.
Simanton had four birdies, rebounding after an early triple-bogey, Vatananugulkit had a pair of birdies and Wong had two as well as each finished the day 5 over. Bremer had a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole, shooting 3 over on both the front and back nine.
UC Davis will complete its fall schedule next week, traveling to the Stanford Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-21.
