UC Davis Opens Stanford Tourney In 10th

STANFORD, Calif. - Seniors Demi Runas and Amy Simanton each fired 2-over 73's on Friday during the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate and are tied for 25th place for No. 4 UC Davis which is 10th in the highly competitive tournament.

UC Davis shot a collective 10-over 295 over the first 18 holes and is nine strokes off the pace being set by third-ranked USC (286). Unranked Oregon State (287) is just one shot back in second, No. 13 Vanderbilt (288) is in third, and No. 32 Stanford (289) and No. 15 Oklahoma State are tied for fourth.

Sophomore Beverly Vatananugulkit is tied for 34th after her 74 while freshmen Andrea Wong and Betty Chen are each tied for 39th after opening with 75's. Freshman Raegan Bremer, playing as an individual, had a 78 and is tied for 70th.

"Today was an okay day," said first-year coach Anna Temple. "We were very consistent from top to bottom and we learned a lot about what we need to do in the next two rounds to make this a successful event. The team is very hungry to get back on the course to show what they are really capable of."

Nine players shot below par on Friday including Doris Chen of USC, Cassy Isagawa of Oregon and Josephine Janson of Oklahoma State who each had 69's and are tied atop the leaderboard. Six other players are tied for second, two shots behind.

Runas started her day well, posting a birdie on the par-5 first hole but had a bogey on the second to get back to even early. She finished her day with two more birdies and three bogeys. Simanton had a pair of birdies and four bogeys overall, highlighting her day by playing the first nine holes even.

Vatananugulkit had two birdies in her round of 74 and was just 1 over after the front nine. Wong had a birdie and Chen had pars on 13 of her final 14 holes. Bremer was 5 over after her first nine holes but played her back nine just two shots over par.

The Stanford Collegiate is the most competitive of the fall season for UC Davis. Of the 17 teams entered, six are ranked in Golfstat's top 10.

UC Davis will tee of the second round beginning at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday and will play with Georgia and USC.
