BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Sophomore Betty Chen
shot a 1-over 72 in her opening round on Saturday for first-place UC Davis at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, and leads the tournament at 2 under after darkness halted play during the middle of the second round.
UC Davis, which shot a 12-over 296 in the first round, is just 2 over in the second round, which will be completed on Sunday morning before the third and final round gets underway. The Aggies, ranked 41st, lead No. 22 Illinois and Purdue who are both 16 over and two shots back. Ball State is third at 22 over and Penn State is a shot back in fifth.
Besides Chen, UC Davis has two other underclassmen players in the top 10. Sophomore Andrea Wong
opened with a 75 and is 4 over while freshman Paige Lee
had a 73 in the morning and is also 4 over. Both players are tied for 10th.
Chen is 1 under and has a two-shot lead over Shane Crutchfield of Xavier and Christina Vosters of Penn State. Senior Jessica Chulya
is 7 over overall after shooting a 76 in the first round while junior Beverly Vatananugulkit
is 12 over. She opened her tournament with an 80.
Chen had two birdies in her first-round 72, collecting them on the par-3 17th and then later on the par-3 third hole. She played the backside of the Hickory Stick Golf Club a shot below par. She's 2 under for her reported scores in the second round and has four holes remaining. Three birdies in the second round have helped her take the individual lead.
Wong scrambled early in her first round with three bogeys and a birdie over her first five holes before posting nine consecutive pars. She had two bogeys in her second round but picked up birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to move to even for the round. Lee had three birdies in her first round and is 2 over so far in the second with four holes remaining.
Chulya was just 1 over on the back nine during her opening 75 and was 2 over in the second when play was halted. Vatananuglkit has rebounded so far in her second round, stringing together eight straight pars. She's 3 over in the second round with three holes to play.
Fifteen teams are entered in the tournament. UC Davis is participating in the event for the first time.
