STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Paige Lee posted a final-round 74 on Sunday while junior Beverly Vatananugulkit tied for the 23rd as the No. 38 UC Davis women's golf team brought its fall season to a close with a 12th-place finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
The Aggies carded a 17-over 301 team score on Sunday and was 34-over 886 overall. UC Davis was two shots back of No. 24 Auburn (884), which was 11th, and two in front of San Jose State (900) which took 13th. Second-ranked USC (831) won the tournament title for the second straight year, beating top-ranked UCLA (836) which was runner-up.
The Stanford Intercollegiate featured nine teams ranked in Golfstat's top 25 including three that are in the top 10.
Vatananugulkit was the Aggies' top finisher overall, tying for 23rd at 3 over. Sophomore Betty Chen finished 5 over and tied for 32nd, Lee was 11 over and tied for 50th, senior Jessica Chulya tied for 78th at 19 over, and sophomore Andrea Wong finished 80th at 20 over.
Lee led UC Davis during the third round, picking up a pair of birdies on her way to a team-best 74. She had her first on the par-4 13th hole and then added another on the par-5 first hole. Lee played her back nine just 1 over.
Vatananugulkit was 4 over after nine holes but then came on strong the rest of the way, covering her last nine holes 1 under thanks to two birdies and just one bogey. She came in with a 75. Chen capped her fall with a 76, carding a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole. She was 1 under while playing Stanford Golf Course's five par-5 holes on Sunday.
Chulya birdied two par-3 holes during her third-round 78, carding the first on the 14th hole and then later doing the same on the eighth hole. Wong birdied the par-5 first hole, helping her finish the day by playing the course's front nine just 1 over.
UCLA's Alison Lee, Golfstat's top-ranked player, shot 70 on Sunday and finished 7 under overall, winning medalist honors by one shot over Sophia Popov of USC.
The weekend's event brought UC Davis' six-tournament fall season to a close. The Aggies continually climbed Golfstat's rankings throughout the fall, winning the Indiana Hoosier Fall Invitational last week and finishing second at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September. UC Davis returns to competition in February with the Peg Barnard Invitational, also at Stanford.
