April 23, 2014

IRVINE, Calif. - Betty Chen, Beverly Vatananugulkit and Paige Lee were each named to the All-Big West Conference women's golf first team while head coach Anna Temple, who led the Aggies to their fifth straight title, earned Big West Coach of the Year honors, it was announced on Wednesday.

Additionally, Andrea Wong was named to the honorable mention squad, her second straight Big West honor. All but Lee, who is a freshman, are repeat honorees.

It was another banner year of awards for UC Davis which has been represented on the first team by at least two golfers every year since joining the Big West for the 2007-08 season.

Chen, a sophomore from Castro Valley, has a team-best 73.2 scoring average this season and has posted six top-10 finishes, including a first-place showing at the Indiana Hoosier Fall Invitational last October when she posted a season-best 2-under 210 total. She was second at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawaii last month and is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Big West Championships last week. Chen was an honorable mention selection last year.

Vatananugulkit, a junior from Cerritos, posted a strong third-place finish at the conference championship last week in San Luis Obispo. It was her second third-place finish this season, joining the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Washington in the fall. She was just 1 over in each of those events. Vatananugulkit, who won the 2012 Big West tournament and was the league's freshman of the year that season, was named to the first team for the third straight year.

Lee, a freshman from Folsom, has made an immediate impact on the Aggies' program by enjoying a consistent season that has been highlighted by five top-10 finishes and a 74.9 scoring average. She wasted little time making her mark with the Aggies, finishing fourth among 90 golfers at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in just her third tournament. Lee added a fifth-place at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational and a seventh-place showing at the Big West tournament.

Wong, a sophomore from San Francisco, earned her second postseason award from the Big West after earning first-team accolades as a freshman. She's averaging 76.1 strokes and has twice finished in the top 10, including a 10th-place finish at the tough Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford, and an eighth-place showing at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.

Temple earned her second straight Big West Coach of the Year honor. She received this year's award after leading the Aggies to a 16-stroke win at the Big West Championships, a  tournament title at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, three runner-up performances and nine top-six showings in 12 tournaments. The Aggies' streak of five straight conference championships is the second-longest in Big West history.

Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge was named the Big West Golfer of the Year while Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton received top freshman honors.

UC Davis, ranked 37th by Golfstat, is preparing for the NCAA Championships which begin with regional tournaments in two weeks. The Aggies will learn where they will be playing during an NCAA announcement on Monday.
