DAVIS, Calif. - The five-time defending Big West champion UC Davis women's golf team will make its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Championship when the Aggies compete in the NCAA West Regional in Cle Elum, Wash., next week, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
The Aggies were selected as the 13th seed in the 24-team event, one of three regional tournaments scheduled for May 8-10. It will be played at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort. The top eight teams and top two players not on an advancing team will move on to the national finals in Tulsa, Okla., on May 20-23.
The NCAA East Regional will be played in Tallahassee, Fla., while the NCAA Central Regional will take place at Stillwater, Okla. Duke and UCLA are ther respective top seeds in those events.
UC Davis earned its spot in the 70-team national championship by winning its fifth straight Big West title two weeks ago in San Luis Obispo. The Aggies, who won by 16 strokes, have the second-longest championship streak in Big West history.
They're making their sixth regional appearance in seven Div. I seasons and are looking to move on to the finals for the fourth time. UC Davis tied for third in 2011 for its highest regional finish while the Aggies' best national showing was a 16th-place showing last season.
UC Davis was sent to the NCAA Central Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., last year and finished sixth, earning their bid to the finals. Chen tied for 11th to lead the Aggie players.
Top-ranked USC is the No. 1 seed in the regional and is followed in the top six by No. 6 Arizona State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Washington, No. 13 Clemson and No. 18 Wake Forest. UC Davis is ranked 37th nationally.
The Aggies will enter the tournament after a strong spring portion of their season which resulted in the Big West championship, two runner-up finishes, a third-place showing and one sixth place. They only finished outside of the top 10 once.
Sophomore Betty Chen (73.2), freshman Paige Lee (74.9) and junior Beverly Vatananugulkit (75.1) were each named to the All-Big West first team while sophomore Andrea Wong earned honorable mention. Anna Temple was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge -who tied with Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton for first place at the Big West Championship - was selected as an individual.
