STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Davis golfers Jessica Chulya and Blair Lewis will join junior Demi Runas at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships in New Jersey next month after advancing at sectional qualifying in Stockton on Thursday.
Runas, the Big West Player of the Year, was exempt from qualifying because of her strong showing at last year's U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. The national championship tournament, which will be held at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J. from June 18-23, is sponsored by the United States Golf Association.
Chulya, who just completed her sophomore season by earning All-Big West first-team honors, advanced after finishing second at Thursday's tournament which was held at The Reserve at Spanos Park Golf Club. She had a 1-under 71, just one shot behind Ji Hye Na of Alameda. Lewis, an honorable mention pick on the All-Big West team, was third after shooting 72.
Six golfers qualified from the sectional, including Aggie alum Kimberly Johnson who had a 74 and secured her sixth consecutive trip to the national championship. Runas was a quarterfinalist at last year's U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, earning exempt status for this year's public links tournament.
Next month's tournament will feature 156 public-course golfers who will open with 36 holes of stroke play before the top 64 advance to match play.
