DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis senior Demi Runas and junior Jessica Chulya each advanced to the prestigious U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship later this month in Oklahoma after strong showings in recent sectional qualifying tournaments.
Runas, who recently finished her Aggie career with her third straight Big West Golfer of the Year honor, posted a 71 at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, Calif., on Sunday, tying for second and earning one of 15 berths from the site to the national championship. Chulya advanced to the national championship after shooting 78 at the Reserve at Spanos Park Golf Course in Stockton. Ten berths were available at that tournament, held on May 22.
Both Aggies are returning to the public links championship after playing in last year's event in Neshanic Station, N.J. Runas advanced through stroke play to match play where she lost in the second round to Kim Kaufman of Texas Tech. Chulya, along with teammate Blair Lewis, participated in stroke play but did not qualify for match play.
Runas was also honored last weekend as winner of the Dr. Hubert Heitman Award, given to UC Davis' female athlete of the year. Chulya has twice been honored by the Big West in her career including All-Big West first-team accolades in 2012.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship will be held at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., from June 17-22. The course will be a familar one for Runas who played there in May with her UC Davis teammates during the NCAA Central Regional. The course will play to a par 72 and will be set up to play to 6,214 and 6,351 yards.
