2009 Collegiate All-Star Golf Team Tour
DAVIS, Calif. - Incoming UC Davis freshman Amy Beth Simanton captured the prestigious Oregon Women's Amateur Championship last weekend while Aggie senior Brittany Smith is currently traveling through Asia with the Collegiate All-Star Women's Golf Team during a nearly three-week tour.
Simanton, who finished second after stroke play at the championship at Bandon Dunes Course last week, captured top honors at the Oregon Amateur by beating Kendra Little of the University of Oregon by posting a birdie on the last hole of the 36-hole final - the par-5 18th.
She opened match play with a 2-up win over Madeline Jarrett before advancing past Linda Jeffery (2 and 1), Jordan Allyne (8 and 7) and third-seeded Kristen Svicarovich (21st hole) to earn a spot in the finals. She led Little by as many as four holes before Little rallied, setting up Simanton's thrilling finish.
Simanton, who graduated from Lake Oswego High School, was second at the Oregon Junior Amateur in both 2006 and 2008 before winning one of the biggest tournaments in the region this year. She has enjoyed an accomplished tenure as a junior and prep golfer including all-state honors and participation in the Callaway Junior Worlds.
Along with the Aggies' other incoming freshman - Demi Runas from Torrance - Simanton has also qualified this summer for the USGA Girls' Junior Championship at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J. from July 20-25. The tournament will consist of stroke play with the top 64 finishers advancing to match play.
Smith, meanwhile, is one of 10 collegiate golfers that departed last Friday en route to Japan to begin an exciting 20-day tour that also includes stops in Korea and Hong Kong. The players will participate in 10 tournaments during their stay while also enjoying cultural and sight-seeing opportunities.
Besides Smith, members of the team include Kelly Belcher (Indiana), Lalita Boonnoppornkul (UCLA), Annie Brophy (Notre Dame), Felicia Eastwick (Oregon), Michelle Grilli (Princeton), Amanda Keith (BYU), Liisa Kelo (Arizona State), Harriett Oweers-Bradley (Yale) and Christina Stockton (San Francisco).
Smith will return for her senior season at UC Davis this fall, playing for a program that has already achieved significant individual and team success during its first four seasons of varsity competition.
