BUCKEYE, Ariz. - Demi Runas, who capped her spectacular UC Davis women's golf career by being named the Big West Player of the Year for the third straight time, picked up her first win as a professional Wednesday when she won the Cactus Tour's event at Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz.
Runas, from Torrance, Calif., posted a three-round total of 214 to win the tournament by six shots over amateur player Krista Puisite and Nina Rodriguez. Runas opened with a 71 before following with rounds of 70 and 73. Amy Simanton, who also finished her impressive Aggie career this past spring, played in the tournament as an amateur and finished fourth at 221, stringing scores of 75, 74 and 72.
Runas' 70 in the second round was the low score of the tournament among the top 14 finishers while Simanton tied for the best score of Wednesday's final round.
Runas won $1,800 for her inaugural professional victory. The Cactus Tour is held in the area of Phoenix, Ariz., and provides competition opportunities for both professional and amateur players.
Both Runas and Simanton were instrumental in UC Davis winning the past four Big West Championships and advancing to four NCAA Regionals. Both players were All-Big West first-team honorees each year.
