DAVIS, Calif. - - Anna Temple, a former professional and accomplished amateur golfer who has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Cal, has been named the head women's golf coach at UC Davis, it was announced Thursday by Director of Athletics Terry Tumey.
Temple replaces Anne Walker who was named the head coach at Stanford last month.
"We're looking forward to having Anna join our coaching staff," Tumey said. "She brings an impressive mix of playing and coaching experience along with a committment to the student-athlete model. Our season is less than a month away and I know Anna will have us ready to go."
Temple, a former all-region player for the Golden Bears during her senior season in 2004, has been assistant coach at her alma mater since 2008. She played three years at Cal after transferring from the University of Wisconsin following her freshman season.
Temple enjoyed an oustanding amateur career, qualifying four times for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship (2000-02, '04) including advancing to the quarterfinals in her first trip. Another highlight was her third-place showing at the 2004 Canadian Women's Amateur Championship.
Temple's professional career spanned the Durmaed Futures Tour in 2005-06 and nearly three dozen tournaments on the European Ladies Tour. She also played briefly on the Ladies African Tour in 2008. She enjoyed a strong showing at the tour's 2008 WPGA Master's, falling in a playoff for top honors.
Temple earned her undergraduate degree from Cal in 2004.
"I am looking forward to continuing the great tradition of Aggie golf and to have an opportunity to work with such a fine group of young ladies," said Temple. "I am grateful to Terry Tumey and to the athletic department for giving me this opportunity and I am honored to now be a part of the UC Davis family."
She will lead a UC Davis program that has moved to elite status in NCAA Division I with representation at all five national championships since moving to Div. I in 2007-08. The Aggies are also three-time defending Big West champions, including capturing this year's title. They return all five starters from that team.
UC Davis will open the season at the Dick Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico on Sept. 17-18.
